Default Is there a way to have Canada Post block mail to an address?

Another question related to my friend's psycho (soon to be) ex-husband.

He moved out at the beginning of August, and yet we are still getting his mail seven weeks later. He obviously didn't bother to put in a change of address, and the kicker is that the moron even used our address to have the mortgage information on his new place sent to. That's brilliant... send the info on your new house to your ex-wife. Genius.

She is quite tired of writing "not at this address" on his mail and throwing it back in the box, and I don't blame her. She wants to just throw it out, but that obviously would present some legal issues.

So, is there a way we can get the idiot's mail blocked so she doesn't have to deal with it anymore?

Can't you just start one of those "I've moved - redirect mail to XXXXX" services at Canada Post and put his name on it?

(and redirect the mail to Nigeria for some scam artist to pounce on....mwahaha)

I continued to receive a lot of mail addressed to the previous owners when I moved into my place 6 years ago. The guy must have been on every mailing list in existence as the volume was crazy. I ended up printing up a nice card which I stuck to the mailbox for a few months that read "Mr. Joe Smith is no longer at this address; please do not deliver his mail here" The message must have worked its way back, as I eventually took the card down, and only get the very, very occasional mail for him still. CIBC still sends his RRSP statements to me every year.... oh well.

I did that for my own mail when I moved. You need to show ID. Plus, it is mail tampering.

If you burn it, who's to say that you didn't try to return it to sender?

This guy sounds like a real prize from what you have explained. Glad to hear she hasn't gone back to him like most girls would have...

I would just continue to write "moved" or whatever on the mail...no point in her or you getting in trouble over some mail.

Leaving notes saying to only deliver certain mail wll not necessarily work. As silly as it is, it's our job to deliver the mail as adressed, and after that, it is out of Canada Posts' hands, reguardless of the situation. In fact, the new directive is that we MUST deliver any addressed admail (all that crap from mailing lists, credit card apps, etc.) even if we know someone has moved or even be deceased for 20 years (it's happened). We have been told that we can't even take it from a mailbox unless it is clearly endorsed. Absurdly, these rules don't apply to first class mail.

I can't tell if this is the latest fad in corporate griping that will go away soon, but either way, letter carriers feel stupid handing mail over to someone knowing it is not theirs.

You have no idea. This guy is a special kind of stupid.

I suppose once Telus cuts him off, he'll finally change his address...

In 3 years since I've moved into my current home I've had Shaw Cable, Credit Collectors, Stock Portfolio statements, GST rebate cheques, notice to vote, Ralphbucks, corporate financial statements and all sort of other goodies sent to my mailbox, all addressed to the previous owner. I have no idea if the guy is still alive, I just keep writing "RTS - no longer at this address" and putting it back to the postboxes.

Whenever I move I make sure I pay for that redirection service for at least a year while I change my address with everyone, I'm just not comfortable with the new owners getting any of my mail.
