Peruvian villagers "infected by alien virus"
ok, not quite, (just read that Scully and Mulder will be returning to the silver screen) but 100 people sick upon exposure to meteorite
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...y/Science/home
Quote:
"We've examined about 100 people who got near to the meteorite crater who have vomiting and headaches because of gasses coming out of there," Jorge Lopez, health director in Puno, said.
"People are scared," he said.
Mr. Lopez said people went to the site after hearing a crash that they thought might be an airplane. "We ourselves went near the crater and now we've got irritated throats and itching noses," Lopez said.

I like that there are a hundred people who are sick, so the health officials go to the crater an inhale the gas - thats bright

I hope there are some follow up stories on this. Sounds like it would be interesting to find out what caused so many to get sick.

Probably a cold bug that happened to spread around the same time, but as usual in these countries it must mean something special. I once saw a shooting star and farted. I doubt I farted because of the star.

It is very unlikely that an extra-terrestial bug/virus could have any effect on human biology.

Video reports from the scene, near the remote Andean village of Carancas along Peru's border with Bolivia, showed what appeared to be a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide), 20-foot-deep (6-meter-deep) impact crater with a bubbling pool of water at the bottom.Authorities said that the crater was made Saturday by a falling meteorite. Agence France Presse quoted a local official, Marco Limache, as saying that "boiling water started coming out of the crater, and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby."

Well there ya go... the gas is coming from the Earth and the meteorite was mearly a triggering device. They are making it sound like the meteorite is to blame for the sickness.

I think it's pretty clear that we're dealing with some kind of alien spore here. It's only a matter of time before our invaders reveal their true intentions. I only pray that by that time Will Smiff is ready to go.

Maybe they all stopped for lunch at Taco Bell on the way to the crater?

Since when is an irritated throat and itching noses being sick.
I suggest Peruvians grow a pair and quit being a bunch of babies.
Geesh, I get the urge to thow up on somebody smoking who walks in front of me while walking home but I am not sick.

It's rare for a metorite, big enough to cause a hole that big gets through the atmosphere... Usually the only ones to get through are either much smaller and don't cause a big crater, or Much bigger and are moving too fast to be affected by the air.. It's not impossible but it could have been some kinda of satellite or nose cone...
Personally I want it to be a metorite, but I'm gonna play the skeptic on this one...

You're right. Meteroites usually burn up in our atmosphere and are no bigger than a chihuahua's head when it lands.
