I'd expect more and more companies to start canadian sites so they can keep our prices higher. What a joke.

Well publishers are starting to change their pricing so it's equal to American pricing...

I'm sure we'll start to see a backlash about the higher Canadian prices. But I've seen reports before where the companies talk about "other factors" that inflate the price.

They've had a Canadian version of their website for years. Or at least a non-American version of it. It used to be that only Americans could get the clearance section. Then when they opened stores in Canada they put up prices in CDN $ for Canadian IP addresses.
You can still access the American store if you use an American proxy server.

The prices should still go down. Yes there are other factors that inflate the price but it should still go down to some degree.
Book/magazine publishers will get a big backlash soon if they don't act.

Ya but in past times i've been able to order directly from the american page. I do remember something about no clearance could be shipped to Canada.

But when do you buy a book over the internet...

They pretty much have to as more and more readers are buying their books on line.

I'm curious where people are getting the "48+ hour limit has been raised from $200 to $400" from, because everything I find on gov't websites says its $200 per person.
For example- here's where I'm getting $200 from: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pbg/cf/e24/README.html
I'd like to know because that might mean a trip for me.

Actually there was an article in one of those free papers the other day discussing how one of the bigger publishers is changing the pricing on the books scheduled for October release and will be repricing their other books as time allows.

I just found a recent declaration form in my suitcase, from my trip south of the border last June. It states a $200 limit for 48 hours. So unless it's been changed in the last few months, $200 is the correct amount

Last date modified was 2006. I remember the allowance increase happened right after my trip to Pittsburgh in March. It did go up this year.

48-Hour travellers exemption increases to $400
Budget 2007 proposes to increase the travellers exemption to $400 from $200 for returning Canadian residents who are out of the country for 48 hours or more. Increasing the 48-hour exemption will make it more convenient for travellers to clear customs and will reduce the amount of processing at the border.
The new exemption, to be given effect by amendments to the Customs Tariff and the Excise Tax Act, will be effective in respect of travellers returning to Canada on or after March 20, 2007.
The dollar limits that apply to the 24-hour and 7-day duty- and tax-free exemptions will remain unchanged at $50 and $750 respectively. Volume and quantity limits on alcohol and tobacco products also remain unchanged.

That settles the issue.
Guess that form I dug up is older than I thought.

Dumb question, but how much is duty then when you go over the $200 or $400 limit?
The Panasonic TH50PX75U is $1499 on that Vanns site in Montana which works out to be a whole $1520 Canadian. Up here they're still charging around $2200 for it... if the duty wasn't so bad I'd take the time and drive down there to pick one up.
Heck I'd even gas up down there as gas is the equivalent of .75 cents a litre.

Just be careful with warranties across the border, many electronics warranties are country specific (ie if you buy a US one you don't get any warranty).

A cutomer of mine actually called down to a friend at the border when I asked him the same question. They said that it really depends on if the TV was manufactured in the states. If it is you will only have to pay the GST at the border. If it isn't you pay GST PLUS a 5% duty. Still much cheaper to purchase in the states
