Laugh all you want but there is a very real chance I will be moving there soon.
Are any CPers from the Queen City? Basically I am looking for advice on where to live, or more importantly...where not to live. Can anyone give me some areas to avoid? I know there are lots.
Thanks.

Do not move next door to a Roughriders place kicker.
Seriously, I've only visited, and more recently just pass through. But it seems like the nicer newer areas are on the very east and west edges of town.
I do have to ask, who's dog did you have to kick to be sent to Regina?

Oh, you poor soul. Try and get something in White City (I think that is what it's called). Or even the East side of town. Newer areas, less crime.

I used to live there. Great place. Awesome burgers at the Icehouse, too.
I'd definitely recommend the southeast side. Regina gets a bad rep, but it's really not any different than other any city out there. I enjoyed living there.

Funny thing is Regina is a huge step up from the hole (Grande Prairie) that I live in now.

The g/f is from there... I gather the area around Martin Collegiate is not good:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?ie=UTF-8&...num=1&ct=image
I gather the south end is newer and has much of the good shopping. In general, the farther you are from "downtown" the better off you are due to the decay of those neighborhoods. But seriously, what does it take to drive cross town, 15 min?

The area around Martin isn't the greatest, but not nearly the worst.
The area around Taylor Field is pretty bad.
For the most part, the newer areas are the good ones. Glencairn, McCarthy Park and Sherwood estates are areas newer than 1970 or so and aren't that good.
The East end is where most of the development is. The North West end also has alot of development.
The south end doesn't have much for new development right now (they are opening another subdivision there in about a year). There hasn't been any new houses in there since 1990 or so (aside from the odd one). Despite not having much for development, the south end is still a very nice area to live in.
If you want to live downtown, the Cathedral area is very nice.
The best area in town is Wascana View. Windsor Park, Albert Park, Lakeridge, Maple Ridge, Westhill and Fairways West (I'm building in Fairways West) are very nice areas too!!
You are right though, you can go from one end of the city to the other in 15 minutes. The rush hour drive downtown is no more than 20 minutes. Traffic is very good here.

Born and raised in south Regina (Albert Park) so I'm biased to the south end.
Albert Park is mostly large two story or split levels built in the 60s-70s. Land around there is pretty solid. The further south you go the newer the houses.
Whitmore Park is about the same age, slightly newer. Watch the houses on the south end as that area of Whitmore is marsh land and people have basement issues.
Hillsdale is an area I also lived in and really liked. It's close to the university, has some well kept houses and close to Wascana park.
The area around Leopold Crescent has some awesome old houses if you like those.
For new areas Emerald Park out the east end of town has big houses and yards. There are a heap of new areas out there I don't know given I haven't been there for 10 years so I defer to Log on those.
I do know housing isn't as cheap as you would expect. My bro-in-law just sold his house in Hillsdale for nearly 300k (granted, the house would be double that here is a crappy area) but gone are the days of getting a big house in Regina for 150k.
It's not as bad a city as people make it out to be. the only really ugly thing is the winter can be nasty for a couple months. It's of course 8-9hrs to the mountains, but it's quick to a few lakes. I can think of worse places to live.
If you need an investment advisor there I have a friend who's aces.

Agree with what's been posted here. Stay away from around Taylor Field, (unless it's gameday of course), Glencairn, Rosemont and north central areas - basically, the further away from downtown the better. The exception to this is the Cathedral area which has a lot of cool 100 year old character homes and lots of nice traditional neighborhoods, if you like that type of home.
I live in Whitmore Park which is in south Regina and the area is awesome. Very easy to get in and out of to other parts of the city (all areas are like this) but also has everything you need real close as south Albert St is close by. This is close to the Hillsdale, Albert Park and Lakeview areas which are close to the university and Wascana Lake. All good areas to live in and houses that are about 30-40 years old. Yes - there is indeed some basement issues in this area so be wary of that or plan for that if you purchase a house in the area. The nice part of the area is there is very little new residential development in it so everything is nice and developed and the yards are alot bigger compared to the new development areas of the city.
Other good areas are the east, southeast and northwest. All very nice, newer areas of the city. If you want to build, the market is crazy - you're looking at at least 18 months before you'll move in. A new area just south of the airport (southwest) is opening up and selling lots and should be real nice too.
I think housing prices are good here compared to Alberta but have gone up ridiculously in past 3 - 5 years - the market is nuts. In fact, our realtor told us no area in Canada has had a higher housing price percentage increase over the past 5 years than Whitmore Park. We bought our house last fall and the value has almost doubled from what we paid for it. That said, a 2,300 square foot house for $400K is still a good deal for lots of Albertans moving eastward.
And one more thing - GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RIIIIIDEERRRSS! If you move here, seriously, get Rider tickets. Even if you're not a fan, the games are a blast and the atmosphere at Taylor Field is second to none.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask or send me a PM.

I spent a fair ammount of time there as a kid and teenager. There are certainly some places that most people would not want to live but otherwise there are plenty of good things about Regina, especially the obvious ones like easier commuting. A couple of good friends of mine just moved there over the summer since they found a really great deal on a house in one of the newer neighboorhoods on the north end. They are very happy being there so far.

Good gawd! South of the airport? Wow, I thought living in Albert Park (Lockwood and Westfield) was close enough to the flight path. I could almost count the rivets on the bottom of the plane as it flew over my yard. As kids we used to finger the planes as went overhead. Thankfully Regina is a small center and thenis only a handful of flights every day.

I think south of the airport may be better than some of those Albert Park homes. At least you wouldn't get any of the direct overhead planes coming over your backyard. But yea, they get pretty close and loud - we live east of Albert St and it gets loud - it must be real annoying closer to the Lewvan there...
