Dollar parity is looking more plausible
Something else is equally important: evidence that Canada's economy is capable of decoupling from its dependence on the United States.
This would let it resist the slowdown that's been shrinking the value of the U.S. dollar against other major currencies.
In the past, our dollar usually floated up and down with the U.S. currency because the U.S. market for our manufactured goods was an overwhelmingly important factor in Canada's economic health.
While the fate of many Canadian factories is still tied closely to demand south of the border, this is less important to our economy in an era of booming prices for our petroleum and metals, where global demand keeps prices high.

Montana is underrated... Actually, the Going To The Sun road is a pretty freakin cool drive, and at the other end of the road lies Whitefish and Kalispell, where you can buy pretty much anything these days (Costco, Home Depot, Target, Lowes). There is no state sales tax, and you can bring back $800 a person to Canada. If you're shopping for electronics, check out Vanns.com. They have a store in Kalispell, but you should phone the store to pre-order anything you want from the web site for pickup at the store, as the stock is small. (Phone the store, not the main web site as they web site doesn't take Canadian orders.)

- Less than 48 hours stay - You may anytime bring back $200 (U.S.) worth of personal merchandise. Remember, if you exceed the $200 exemption, all your items become dutiable.
- Over 48 hours stay - Every 30 days you are allowed to bring back free of tax and duty $800.00 (U.S.) worth of personal merchandise. You may include 100 cigars (non-Cuban), 200 cigarettes and 1 litre (34 oz.) of alcoholic beverage as part of your exemption. Articles in excess of the personal exemption up to $1,000 will be assessed a duty. Members of families traveling together are permitted to combine their exemptions. Unsolicited gifts worth up to $50.00 (U.S.) may be sent by mail into the U.S.

OK, sorry for the confusion, the limit used to be $200 but was recently changed to $400 and most web sites are out of date. I believe the above quote citing $800 is for Americans returning to the US.

I just noticed abercrombie and fitch has started their Canadian website. Prices are 20 to 30 dollars higher per shirt or what have you. There's no way of accessing the american site in canada anymore.
I'd expect more and more companies to start canadian sites so they can keep our prices higher. What a joke.
