Lil Protto
Thought I should open this up, seeing as how I posted it in the Heckle thread.
I will be expecting my first child in January. My wife and I are very excited. We have also found out it's a healthy little boy, and I'm already buying up all the infant Flames gear that I can.
Any advice for a first time father?

Congrats Protto!
No advice for a parent specifically, but I've found the 'firm but fair' tactic always works really well with my nieces and nephews.

Oh man! Welcome to the world of being tired!! Congrats man!
Advice? Listen politely to everyones advice, and then do what you think is right. You'll know your little guy better than anyone, so you'll know best, despite what Grandma's best friend says.
Do it all. Walks with him, take him everywhere, change him, feed him (when that time comes), steal him for a whole day to let your wife rest and go do "guy stuff" even though he's too small to understand.
AND, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT LOOK AT THE PLACENTA AFTERWARDS!!!!!

CONGRATS Protto, enjoy EVERY moment!
Sleep is overrated anyway. Fatherhood is the very best thing ever! Everyday I can't wait to get home and see my son.
He has his 1st cold right now (he's 9 months old), I thought a snotty nose would gross me out, buy when it's you own it's not as gross as you'd expect. Even diapers were worse in my mind than the reality, don't get me wrong I don't like them, their just not as bad as I was anticipating.
PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES! They grow up from day-to-day, take a ton of pics! I go back already and can't believe the difference.
Congrats again!

you'll get a lot of advice from people who think they know everything already. But this is definitely one that's true. Offer to change every single diaper the first year before they eat "real" food. Because it only gets nastier from there. Congrats! Oh yeah, catch up on your sleep now, because more than likely, you won't get much next year.

I keep telling myself that my overnight shifts I worked in Radio have helped me to prepair for the world of Fatherhood.

Congrats Protto!!
I am not a father yet (just recently married), but the best advice i can give is don't let TV/Video Games raise your son for you. Be as involved as your schedule con permit (perhaps even more so), and get him involved in an activity he will be passionate about (hopefully hockey )
This is advice for when he gets a little older, but hey, thats all I really know, becasue I haven't been around many babies.
As for the infant Flames gear, Zellers has alot of good stuff, in case you havent checked there yet.
Any name ideas yet Protto?

Congratulations.
The best years of your life are underway. Advice? Make a deal with your wife: Tell her you'll do all of the diapers until l'il Protto starts eating solid food, then she can take over.

Babies like Tim Hortons and Home Depot.
And cute little babies tend to attract hot girls to coo over him also...
Oh, and congratulations!

Just a quick question for all the dads here....did you guys realize after a while (a few months maybe) that you really had NO IDEA what 24/7 really meant until you had a kid?

Some people are lucky... damn lucky. Some babies adjust right away and sleep well right away. My son was your prototypical sleepless baby. Oh he slept well during the day, but the day time is when everybody else is awake and bothering the heck out of you so they can see your baby. So you're awake at night entertaining your baby, and you're awake during the day entertaining your clueless friends and family. So you'll have to learn when to take a stand so your wife can get some rest. For our next kid (due February) we are going to be smarter. If my wife is tired and needs sleep, nobody is allowed to visit. She didn't get her rest the first time around and it took an abnormally long time to recoop.

I had no idea. My wife and I have three kids, and I was never so tired in my life. When my wife was nursing our second, my eldest boy was sick with the stomach flu. He literally was barfing every 10 minutes. I spent the night helping ol' pukey pants, then put in a long day at work.
My second but was susceptible to the croupe. He had it late one evening and I took him to the Children's Hospital for a four-hour wait. He was given Decadron, and the physician informed me that I had to stay up with him and not let him sleep for at least two hours. It was three a.m. at this point. That was a tough night, and the next day was I draggin' my butt.

Wow, congratz!
Yeah, get your rest now, and enjoy the young years before they learn to walk and say "no I don't want".
Don't let TV raise them, and good sleep habits are very important to develop, get them to be able to go to sleep themselves is the best thing you can do for your own sanity.

I hear you. I've spent quite a bit of dough at the local Starbucks during those mornings. But its all good in the end.

That is awesome news, and congratulations! Being a father is really fantastic, it is rewarding and tiring at the same time...kind of like climbing a mountain!
I don't really have any advice for you, except to relax and take things as they come. Its not as bad as everyone says (especially regarding the sleep) and it is better than anyone can describe it!
Congrats!

Congrats! My only advice is that, apparently, the Diaper Genie II is the way to go
My daughter was born in February and there are a ton of cute things she did for maybe all of three days. I regret not getting them on camera.
