Default Google sponsers new X-Prize - $20 million to put a lander on the moon!

http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/13/f...in-20-million/

Quote:
Google's sponsering a new X Prize, and this one has its sights set a bit higher than suborbital. The new contest wants competitors to send a robotic rover to the moon and beam back a gigabyte of data -- including pictures and video -- of the trip. The rover also has to travel 1,312 feet across the surface of the moon.
$20 million seems low for this, considering the original x-prize was $1 million, but getting into orbit is 60 to 70 times more energy required than the original x-prize suborbital target.

I figured the next x-prize would just be an orbital launch vehicle.

Good idea.

Amazing how Google tries their best to extend beyond just being a search engine.

$20 Million is too low. It's $30 Million. (after bonuses)

I hearby propose the formation of the Calgarypuck Lunar X Prize project. We just need to get some ideas together and then we can get Golden Palace to actually finance the mission. Who's on-board?

Lol I'd steal Jack FM's transmitter just as a matter of principle.

5 reasons no one will win, and I think I agree.

The goal of this prize should be orbit, not a lunar lander.

I'd say all of those are bang on. 5 years is too short. A couple schools like (Berkely?) took up NASA"s challenge to build a satallite, and I believe it took them 3-5 years.

It's just a plot for Google to get their logo carved onto the surface of the moon.

Hahaha, people had enough trouble winning the first x-prize, now they want them to land on the moon? Even Governmental Organizations have trouble doing this on the moon or other planets. Remember the ESA's Beagle 2 lander? Huge amount of funding would be required as well as a large dedicated corporation. I don't see anyone suceeding.

Orbit would have made much more sense.
