Default CRTC: TV Rules Need Overhaul

Several interesting conclusions of this '5 year review'. Most interesting of these is probably their thoughts on US Simulcasts...

Quote:
The right to simulcast has for decades boosted the revenue of Canadian networks by ensuring larger audiences for Canadian TV commercials. However, the report questions whether those policies have led to a situation where the prime-time schedules of Canadian broadcasters are dominated by U.S. programming, rather than domestic fare.

Oh man. How happy would I be if simsubbing was eliminated. In fact; it's probably time for another complaint to the CRTC about it.

The classic example I use is Global. Their Canadian Content consists of:
3.5 hours of morning news
2 hours of "Feed the starving children" programming.
1 hour of noon news.
2 hours of evening news
1 hour of late night news.

What I'd like to see is fewer Cancon restrictions. I would say so far it has produced about 1 good show per decade; I can name 3. Beachcombers, Littlest Hobo, and Corner Gas. Let the Canadian stations still show US programming, but make them work for it. Maybe I'd watch if they had fewer comercials, more contests and prizes, or a better signal.

I think that if a Canadian station bought right to turn a Japanese game show into a Canadian version, it would be a huge hit.

Yep, Global is pretty well a waste of bandwidth and CTV isn't much better. I know in HD, simsubs often seem to be screwed up in someway and the picture quality is lower. I like to buy and watch Canadian but if I can find the same program at a different time on an American station, I'll go American. So far I'm lucky and Global doesn't have a west HD station.

And what I like is having the choice. For example on Sunday the evening game was on TSN and NBC. I tried all 3 stations, and TSN seemed to have the best picture. So rather than me muttering to myself about how much I hate simsubs, I enjoyed the game and watched the Canadian comercials.

Unfortunately being on Bell there not being a Global-W HD feed doesn't do anything for me. Apparently Toronto is closer to Calgary than Seattle.

I agree. The simsubbed similcasts are worse quality. That, and the over compression of the HD signals annoyed me so much. You can download 720p OTA rips from US residents; they are 1.2 gb per 1 hr episode mkv files, adn they look good. I have A/B tested them against my bell, and the rips average a better quality. It is crazy, I know. It is very sad that downloaded rips are better quality than what I can actually buy.

I am not one of those people that thinks all good things in life should be free, so I still subscribe to my full Bell package which costs around $80/month. Plus, I need the Bell for all sports. I also subscribe to a premium newsgroup provider and Shaw Xtreme.

Hopefully a revamped CRTC would provide me the convienence of actually being able to watch my real TV and achieve the best quality at the same time.

All great suggestions in the supposed overhaul. Will any of it happen? Well, I'm not holding my breath.

The CRTC needs a complete and total overhaul. And maybe it shouldn't even exist anymore. It served a good purpose a long time ago, but now its purpose seems to be to make sure the CRTC continues to exist.

Easy big fella, the CRTC does more than regulate CanCon and SimSub.

you need a federal regulatory body to govern transmissions, the CRTC grants licenses for new TV and Radio stations it governs Wireless companies and if i'm not mistaken ISPs and telecoms as well. It still serves an important purpose.

CRTC has decided to stay away from the internet part of telecom but that could change because they are reviewing that as well. My problem with the CRTC is that they just for the most part just follow 2 years later after the FCC in the states has made a change. If you just are following make it the same date.

I see your point, but I think there still is a place for the CRTC, and FCC in the US. These regulators do much more than slap out fines for superbowl performances and whatnot. There are some weird people out there with enough money to put some weird stuff on TV. These regulations stop stuff like that from happening, if nothing else.

Exactly! The CRTC is a joke...they love to promise but they never deliver.

I'm with you on this as far as the whole "Canadian content" issues go.
