We're on our second diaper genie. Had one for eight years or so. (Wow, that's a lot of diapers when I think about it!) The first type didn't work that well but the latest works perfectly. I wouldn't use anything else....

We just bought a steel garbage can where the lid sealed fairly tightly and it works pretty well. That said, we live in a house so when you open the lid of it, the smell is brutal but we can get away from it and don't really notice it. I would imagine in a smaller area like a basement sweet, the opening and closing of the lid could impact everywhere.
We chose this route however as we were told to stay away a from the diaper genie. Too expensive and doesn't always work. That said, I have triplets so we would've been giving it 3 times the workout.

The people who live upstairs never lock their door. I could just sneak the diapers up there when they're not around...
Jagger: Is that the Diaper Genie II?
Nufy: We're in Huntington Hills.

We used to use the diaper genie. It worked great but it seemed like a chore to remember to empty the diaper genie so we just bag it (dirty diaper) and throw it in the garbage outside. My wife found some bags that works great to use for dirty diapers. My wife actually bought bags specifically for dealing with dirty diapers and tossing them in the garbage.... we just find it easiest to toss it in the outside garbage.

Diaper Genie II. I think it was voted baby product of the year by some magazine (according to my wife). A lot easier to use than the original Diaper Genie.

Diaper Genie works great, and is the least offensive smelling contraption IMHO. Refills are quite cheap at Wally World, I just stock up every few months.

I have a diaper genie 2 now, and it is much better than the first generation. After a while the plastic just absords the smell though...but its better than it floating around the house!

diaper genie is our saviour as well. You just have to make sure to plug your nose when you open the vile thing. Advice to new fathers: offer to change every single diaper their first year of life (or until they're on solids) because the smell just gets nasty when they start eating "real" food.

Speaking of which, I've noticed that with our second boy, the stench is not even close to what the first one produced. My wife has been making all of her own baby food this time around, and it makes a huge difference. I can tell when he's eaten from a premade, store-bought meal...

We just wrap it up in those plastic bags from the proudce in the supermarkets, and take it to the garbage each night. We live in a condo, so we have to get rid of it pretty quick or we'll be smellin' poop all night. haha....

So if a guy steals a roll of those bags from Safeway tonight, how long do you suppose until I'd have to steal another one? I bet there are a buttload of bags on those rolls...

haha.... I'm pretty sure at least 2-3 months. I don't remember the last time we took it, but superstore has huge rolls. So does T&T supermarket if you're up north.
