How is the Canadian doing relative to other currencies? Euro dollar, Pound Sterling, Yen, etc.

It gives us a more accurate look on how the Cdn $ is doing on a global scale.

I still think that the dollar closes this year at about .93-.94 and probably closes in 2008 around 0.95
Most of the gains to this point have been due to a weaker than expected US economy and high commodity prices. I think that the price of oil comes back a little over the next year or two ($65-70) and Canadian growth drops by a bit to bring this change about.

But what do I know...I'm a far cry from an economist!

I have been watching the dollar and it never drops below $0.94 for more than a day. It always bounces back up the next day. I think at the minimum it closes the year at $0.95.

Last I heard from economists, the general consensus was that if things kept up, the dollar would reach $0.96 around September, which seems to have been correct. They also said that they expect parity next year.

Related, who's the currecny exchange in the downtown area that usually gives the best rate?

Headed to the US on Saturday for a week, maybe I should head over there today to pick up some US$, not that for the small amount (500$ or so)I'd be taking out will make a big difference if it drops even 2 cents off .964, but still....

Is it really worth shopping around for one or 2 points on that kind of transaction? Even if you get 2% cheaper; you are still saving only $10. (And I thought most currency places only save you 0.5-1.0%)

If you work downtown and it's a 5 minute walk to your bank or a 10 minute walk to Calforex, I'd do it for $10.

Yeah, I know, not a big deal. But Calforex on 2nd street is as far as the bank for me, and its the principal.

Not to go off track to far as this has been covered before, but this rate just makes me contemplate if major purchases should be made.

Probably not on this trip to Hawaii where one is restricted by baggage on a flight, but once again, visiting the issue of picking up a kick ass TV (Sony XBR 60", a quick check of the one that retails here for $5000 (that you can probably get somewhere for $4000, can be found for around $2500 US = $2600 CDN), or even, a vehicle (a situation that has to be adressed in the next 4 months anyways for us)

This is great, I am currently moving my US car to Canada and will pay off in Canadian dollars so I will actually be saving a TON of money.

Sort of related...but not entirely. I saw a thing on the news recently in which some credit cards are now charging a 2.5% fee for foreign currency transactions. So they make money by giving you a lower than market rate...and they ding you a 2.5% fee. Just something to keep in mind if you are going to the U.S. Check with your card to see if they're charging it, and if they are you might want to bring some extra cash with you. Afterall is there anything more fun than having 65 bills in your wallet and them amounting to like $800 because you somehow collected 32 $1 bills.

I just saved myself about $50-$60 buying some muchly needed new clothes from the US, even with the Duty and Taxes. (Free Shipping, too.)

Some experts did say the CAD could surpass the USD by September this year. Although I doubt we'll see that this month, having almost parity is kind of a nice change, the double edged sword that it may be.
