Default European Grocers and Bakeries

Does anyone know of a good Italian bakery and Italian grocery store? I'm after a really good tiramisu birthday cake.

I know there's a German deli north of North Hill Mall, but I haven't seen any Italian places.

Thanks!

You're thinking of Nicastro's.

I've been to many Italian stores. The italian importers right by the West Jet building off of McKnight is amazing. They've gone through a few name changes so I can't remember what they are called now. I was just there last week. They have an great deli and cafe inside.

There's the Italian Supermarket on Edmonton Trail, a few blocks north of 16th.

There's Dino Rosa's Italian Market on Macleod Trail across from the Carriage House (in the same mall as the King's Head and the Pizza Hut, it's behind the 7-11).

I haven't been to either one, but those are the ones I've seen in my travels.

Peppino's on Kensington road is a mini-Italian supermarket.

Kensington & 12th street.

I would try Mercato on 4th St SW and maybe Lina's Italian Market on Centre St N.

Mercato is great. Theyve got a lot of stuff packed into a small space and a great restaurant attached.

My only complaint is its somewhat overpriced. A lot of specialty ingredients arent easy to find elsewhere so thats understandable but you wouldnt want to buy canned tomatoes, herbs, or basic olive oil there.

The one by West Jet is attached to the Scarpones facility, so we just call it Scarpones. Have been really happy with the product and the prices there. Fantastic fresh bread. Get there at about 9:30 on a Saturday morning for it straight from the bakery.

I agree that it is expensive. However, I think that their bulk olive oil is reasonbly priced. It is really good and it costs about $13 for 500ml.

I'll second that . The pizza is another favorite treat of mine, especially the brushetta style. You won't be disappointed.

All this talk about Italian markets and no one has asked if any of them sell Brio.
