Does anyone else think that the Aviator was TERRIBLE?
I thought it was long, drawn-out, boring, and over-hyped. Leonardo has to stop making 3 hour movies.
I honestly can't believe it was nominated for 11 oscars.
ELEVEN?!
On that note (and the fact that this is turning into a random movie thread as mentioned), I really liked Almost Famous.
But seriously, I didn't enjoy the Aviator in the least.

I echo other comments. I'm shocked MMF that you haven't seen more from Cheadle. Have yourself a little Cheadle film fest. Chech out Devil in a Blue Dress (with Denzel Washington - in my opinion Cheadle's best performance though I haven't seen Rwanda yet). A must see.
|
The little lady asked what we were doing for the weekend and I already told her I am renting a couple of Don Cheadle movies one night. She didn't run away pondering what drug I was on so it looks to be a go. Devil in a Blue Dress looks like a must, any other?
Well Out of Sight is definately a must see if you haven't seen it already. Steve Sorderberg at the top of his game.
You might also want to check out The United States of Leland. I actually haven't seen it yet but its on my "to rent list".
The amazing thing about Cheadle is he's even great in tripe like The Family Man.

MMF keeps talking about how Paul Giamatti was so great in American Splendor.. So I thought I'd check it out.. I put off renting it for about a month and finally saw it last weekend.. God damn he's quite possibly my new favourite actor, he nails Harvey Peakar to a tee.. Brilliant movie too.. Dammit..
|
Boo ya! As good as Giamatti is in Sideways he was propably better in last years American Splendor. I am glad you liked it Kermit. Giamatti really had to do an outstanding performance as Peakar because of the fact they used the real Peakar's voice for voiceovers and live narrartion throughout the movie.. how frreakin hard is that? American Splendor is one of those movies I hyped up pretty big on this messagebooard, and I am still glad - despite my hype -- that you still loved it.
I hope Paul Giamatti continues to get meaningful lead roles, his perfromances in American Splendor and Sideways proves beyond a shadow of a doubt he is one of the better actors out there working today. Even his smaller roles in THe Negotiator, Man on the Moon and Saving Private Ryan have been top notch quality.

So, nobody gets the Melvin and Howards thing above?
I'm disappointed.....or maybe just really old!
|
I had to go on imdb.com to check out what you were talking about Dis, sorry my friend.. it was before my time lol.
What I was talking about can't be found on IMDB.com AP! Although, you certainly found it's roots. One key difference....the 'S' on the end of the title I used. The movie you found was Melvin and Howard.

Harold and Kumar is the most underated movie this year....yes, on the surface it looked like another dumb comedy, but most people who watch really do love it, and deservedly so. It actually reminds me of Office Space in a lot of ways....

Watched the Aviator over the weekend. Fell asleep and had to watch it again later. I just don't see what the hype is over this movie. Impeccable pedigree and some excellent wardrobing but that's about it.
Also watched Sideways. What a POS. If I want to see a good road trip movie I'm with Table 5 and I'll watch Harold and Kumar. The movie had a few bright spots in it but overall a total, zero redeeming features.
I did watch Million Dollar Baby, and I'm on the boat with the critics of this one. I though it was entertaining and it certainly did hold my attention for the entire length of the movie (ahem). It also has the pedigree that Academy voters like.
IHH's prediction: A sweep for old Clint. MDB for Best Picture, with Eastwood taking Best Director, and Swank for Best Actress.

Ray is my favorite movie of the year. Aviator was big budget and told the story well but I thought it definetely didn't live up to the hype.

I agree. I thought Ray was fantastic. But I still haven't seen Million Dollar Baby...
Finding Neverland is the other best pic nomination I haven't seen, but it doesn't really seem all that interesting to me....Anyone seen it?

Seen this too. Despite it's quasi chick-flick status, I have to say I liked it but it didn't seem to have the same "wow" factor as an Aviator or MDB. Depp once again shows how he can act any story and still make the movie, no matter the story or script. Too bad he's up against Jaime Foxx, otherwise I'd say he's deserved of a statue.

I just watched Hotel Rwanda. Absolutely amazing, a powerful movie. Makes you ashamed that you didn't pay more attention to the crisis when it happened.
It won't happen but I hope Hotel Rwanda wins for Best Picture, if only because a few more people might watch it to learn the story of what unfolded there.

I didn't think the Aviator was that 'great', it really felt like random pieces of his life and the ending was unexpected and bizarre.
The Passion of the Christ got snubbed.
|
Faid I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. "Howard Hughes His life and madness" by Donald L. Barlett & James B. Steele is a great book that just came out (Best biography on HH to date).
The movie is correct for the most part, but its just skewed in a way to make Howard Hughes look like a genius and some sort of peoples champion - which isn't the case at all.
I mean it doesn't talk about him completely running TWA into the ground and many of his other business failures (which was just about ANYTHING he touched).

Now read Shake Hands With The Devil and shake your head even more. My excuse is that I was 11 at the time, what's yours?
Not only do you just get furious when Dallaire is trying to get help in the first place, you get even more when the world screws it up when they finally DO help.. Especially the French!

Kermit I agree that Shake Hands With the Devil is a great account as to what actually happened at the time. If anyone is interested in the situation there is another book titled "we wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with out families - stories from rwanda." It was written by Phillip Gourevitch who if memory serves me correct writes for the New Yorker. It is a really really really harrowing description as to what went on, and the chapter that described the killings is perhaps one of the most shocking, and moving things you will ever read.
Just to elaborate the description includes the weapons that were used and what I found to be really sad was the fact that people paid money in order to be shot with a bullet instead of hacked to death with assorted weapons.

I went to see Dallaire speak a couple of weeks ago @ the UofC, it was pretty good.
