Software Unlock for iPhone
Not sure if this will have any affect on people in Canada. But I thought it was interesting at least.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/iph...deo-297651.php
And the company's website.

The trick is finding a re-seller to get a copy of the software.

True.
But at the end of the gizmodo article, they are talking about the iPhone dev team releasing their own free unlocker.
Which doesn't make any sense to me what so ever.. Apple signed a deal with AT&T as the carrier for the iPhone, now apple is going to release software that unlocks it so it can be used on any carrier?
Which to me, would explicitly stated in the in Terms and Conditions of the contract between AT&T and Apple, at least from the AT&T side. If it isn't there, then AT&T is fubar.

What i don't connect is how to buy the phone off contract....In other words, is it possible to buy it from the Apple Store without signing up for a 3 year term or whatever...
Could be a dumb question, I just know how Telus works.

Not a dumb question, this would be for people who buy the phone and pay the fee to get out of the contract. So a lot.

Maybe the contract stated that the exclusive part of the deal would end when a software unlock became available?

Possibly.
But you can purchase an iPhone from an apple store, with out having to sign up for a contract. Basically you just walk out with your phone.
Now if you wanted to use your iPhone, previously you would be required to sign a contract with AT&T. Now with this unlock, you can put in a SIM card from any carrier that uses SIM cards, and you will receive service.

But does this hack actually activate an unactivated phone as well? Or does it just unlock it?

I think it just unlocks it. But you can activate your iPhone using iTunes.
But if you have place a SIM card into the iPhone from another phone that you have previously activated, would it not work as well?

That would be the silliest deal in history. That negates the whole point of an exclusive deal!

I don't think so, when you get the phone it basically won't do anything regardless of the SIM, and then when you activate it through iTunes you sign up to a contract with AT&T through that process.
So unless this gets around that activation somehow you still have the contract to deal with.. unless I totally misunderstand it all.

You can get an iPhone on pay as you go as well... so you can do it without the contract.

Interesting! Well I'm sure AT&T paid something for the excusivity.. but that means that at least unlocked iPhones' prices won't be iPhone + contract + unlock, just iPhone + unlock.

FYI I read an article recently saying that Rogers says that they do not mind people using iPhones on their network, but they cannot guarantee functionality. So use their network at your own risk.
Someone here in Ottawa followed the instructions and has his iPhone working perfectly with Rogers (obviously minus visual voice mail). But he's very, very scared what his bill is going to be. Some people estimate that he's going to owe $700. No wonder Rogers is promoting people to go out and hook up iPhones to their network!!!

That's exactly why I would never buy an iPhone. That in order to use it to its full potential, your monthly bill would be astronomical based on the rates canadian cell companies charge.
So in Canada, the iPhone is basically a touch screen phone / mp3 player. Unless you can afford the price of the phone every month to pay for your data charges.
