Default Who likes microwave popcorn?

...Well, it doesnt like you. Or, at least the fumes when you open it don't.

A pulmonary specialist at Denver's National Jewish Medical and Research Center has written to federal agencies to say doctors there believe they have the first case of a consumer who developed lung disease from the fumes of microwaving popcorn several times a day for years.

"We cannot be sure that this patient's exposure to butter-flavoured microwave popcorn from daily heavy preparation has caused his lung disease," Dr. Cecile Rose cautioned in the letter. "However, we have no other plausible explanation."

http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/200...corn-lung.html

Now, this guy ate a boatload of popcorn, but this is still interesting. Seems you're safe if you don't hover over the bag inhaling the buttery aroma as you open it. They also made a good point on CBC news about people who open lots of microwave popcorn at work etc. If this is you, maybe do it in an ventelated area.

Anybody going to buy a real popcorn maker now? Who knew real butter was so good for you ??

Real butter is actually rather good for you compared to the artifical crap they put in prepared foods. Just don't eat too much of it.

Hopefully now I've got some ammo against the inconsiderate people who make 4 bags a day in my office... Man I hate that smell.

I've known that real butter is good for me for a long time. that's why i got a real popcorn maker already, and it's why I go to the theater...the health benefits.
I wonder how much exposure you need before it starts to effect your health. I bet Rita McNeil is shaking in her Moomoo right now.

When I make it at home, I have to do the initial opening of the bag outside so the whole place doesn't stink for hours.

Reading this has now given me a craving for a little...

It seems quite a bit. This guy that they have identified ate 2 bags/day and liked to breathe in the fumes when he opened it. I doubt many people have that much exposure - except maybe the people in llama's office...

It's all about the airpopped for me. And I don't use real butter either. I've found the best stuff is Becel with olive oil as it doesn't shrivel the popcorn when it goes on.

I'm seriously having a craving now.

There was a news story awhile back about people from that popcorn factory that developed respiratory illnesses and cancer from that artificial butter in the factory.

Yup, same stuff. They have known about the chemical in it that causes the problems for a long time, they just never thought it was harmful at the consumer stage...until now. These companies have paid out 10s of millions of $ in compensation to workers who got sick from it.

I have microwaved popcorn for years in brown lunch bags. I have never had any problems but I do NOT put oil in the bag. I like the freshness of popcorn made this way - none of that chemically taste I find in pre-packaged microwave popcorn. And I know exactly what I am eating...

I add butter, salt, parmesan, etc. after I cook the popcorn and toss it in a bowl. Tastes great!

Or the old fashioned putting seeds and oil into a pot and poppoing over an oven top.

Our company handbook actually contains a clause that popping popcorn in the microwave is grounds for disciplinary action.

A few years back someone burned the bejesus out of our microwave, and stank up the entire building so badly the president wouldn't come to work for a couple days (he is very sensitive to smells).

Frankly, I have never understood why anyone would want microwave popcorn at work anyway...

The handful of times I have used them they have worked fine. It's pretty easy to burn the popcorn though.
