haircuts
ok so i have a question about haircuts and tips
do you guys generally tip your haircutters? are you expected to? i dont have a problem giving a tip if they were really nice and did a fast good job, but should i feel bad for not giving a tip most of the time? what are your guys opinions on that. im already paying for the service(between $14 and $17 usually) so is a tip expected?( i know its just a matter of opinion, but id like to hear them)
thanks

I always do.
Canadians are notoriously bad/reluctant tippers so it is not surprising that you (and many others i am sure) do not.
My hair cuts cost $32 and i usually leave ~$5, which is probably not even enough but since a lot of people don't even leave that much....
The biggest problem i have is that i am now pretty good friends with the guy who does my hair so tipping is really awkward. Like, why don't i just buy him and his gf a drink when we are out or something instead of just giving him cash?! But regardless....
On a side note, if you are only paying $14-$17/cut then the person doing the cutting is not making very much of that, probably not more than $14/hr and likely less, so yeah a tip would probably be appropriate.

Unless you come away looking like a badger hacked at by a blind woodsman then yes, yes you should.
I figure $2-3 usually does the trick.

I always tip my barber a couple of bucks.
He always does a great job and it's my way of showing appreciation for what he does.

I don't tip because they do a good job, I just want to follow the social norms. And it's easy to give them a $20 for the $16 haircut and walk out the door.

I think it's expected, but then again tips seems to be expected everywhere these days.
I tip because I feel I have to, not because I want to

Where I go it costs $13. I usually give a 20 and ask for a 5 back.
I don't have a problem leaving the two bucks, because its cheap to begin with and they do a good job there.

Quoted for truth. It's like saying "thanks for not screwing up."
But usually I tip 15% for a haircut.

Really? I find it's the complete opposite. Canadians tip almost always, for any service and seems that it's expected. Heck, I work in retail, and I get tips, very rarely, but I do.
Also, my dad's worked in a Chinese restaurant for the majority of the time that he's been in Canada and even he says tips are expected if the food wasn't bad (no tip is understandable if the food/service was really bad). Even considering that it's considerably less to tip for a Chinese restaurant than it is for a "western" restaurant.

When I used to get my hair cut, I'd tip 4 bucks if it was a good job. So, I'd just plunk down a 10, a 5, and a 1, then head out the door. But, as you can see below ....

Seconded. After an initial investment of 60 bucks for a good set of clippers, I've more then made my money back. I usually take it down to a 1 guard every week, or every two weeks if I'm busy.

I make it a rule to tip, and don't really understand why some people don't.
If you get crappy service, were rude to, or something else that ticked you off happened...then by all means, don't tip.

nope, I never have. And most recently, I don't have much hair to cut. It takes them a whopping 5 minutes to trim mine with the clippers. They're getting a deal from me in that it takes so little time to cut my hair.

I have a friend who worked at an ultra cuts and she made next to nothing without tips. The haircutters at those places(which it sounds like are popular with you guys- 15 dollar harcuts???) basically only make their (very low) wage- most of the price for the haircut goes to the salon owner.
Anyways that being said, I tip at least 5 bucks on a haircut. and the last haircut I got cost 62 bucks (being female sucks). The one I usually go to charges 45 and I leave her 50. But I know girls who will regularily drop 300 bucks on their hair after highlites and so on.
Basically I would feel like a big prick if I didn't tip them...

My wife cuts my hair so, of course, she gets a tip. Usually hours later.

There are only a few places around that have a not tip policy. If you plan to go back to the same salon, to the same stylist I suggest you tip. It's a good idea to keep the person styling your hair happy because they'll do a better job.
