Default Kicking Horse Canyon bridge near Golden

Heard on the news this bridge is opened Thursday night and is open to traffic. Just thought I'd post cause it's an interesting engineering project and cool bridge. It was cool though driving down the side of a mountain down the steep and twisting road.

bout damn time. i know building on a mountain is about as bad as it gets, but that construction site was there for close to 10 years or so. hopefully it'll make the trips back to BC much less maddening comeing into Golden

Yes, but they finished well ahead of schedule, something like 10+ months, that's pretty freakin good.

Definately a great feat of Engineering. Now I guess they are going to start the next phase and tunnel through some mountains. Should be a cool drive to go from a huge elevated bridge into the depths of a mountain.

Ya forsure. They've definitely taken a page out of the roadways in the swiss alps. Very cool.

I was through there just a few days ago ... the look up to that bridge from the old road was spectacular. The thing is just massive.

But only on a sunny day, no schedule, with a good handling car and no oncoming truck traffic.

Well thats a step in the right direction. That old road was a saftey disaster and was built to handle traffic loads of the 1960's. I've long complained about that stretch of hiway not being suitable as the main transportation route in a first world country.

But if you want to see a mega construction bridge go to the Hoover dam and check out the new hiway they're buiding there. I'll try to search for some images but the bridge is seriously going to be like 300 feet or more above the top of the dam. It was pretty crazy and makes that Kicking horse one look like a back roads bridge.

BURN

I live in vancouver so I am more than familiar with the "the roads are fine but we need to pay the union so lets invent some useless construction".

Also familiar with:
Being soft on unions with unreasonable demands
Forseeable olympic bankrupture
$800 blue jeans
George Bush being the antichrist
Wild animals lives being higher valued than human life
Being a horrible evil person when a can goes in ther garbage.
Becoming a social outcast in public when enjoying a ciggarrete.
Horrible traffic (made no better by the "necessary" constuction.

And my favorite:
People doing 30 in the fast lane!!!!
SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT
and im out

I've been by the bridge twice this summer and it is indeed incredible to see. Ironically I almost caused an accident admiring the new safe bridge.
