But with Canada's BS cell phone rates. You need an NHL player salary to be able to afford its full potential.

Apple is secretly happy that people have hacked the iPhone. Revenues from the setup and monthly plans is a bonus but the iPhone is a gateway drug much like the iPod is for other Apple hardware.

They can't come out and encourage hacking the phone like they did with AppleTV but they dont care.

I know it will but are there any documented cases of it yet?

AT&T HAD to have thought about this situation. Wouldn't it be breach of contract for Apple to not try to patch any software modifications that would unlock the phone, at least as long as AT&T has exclusive rights?

The first unlocking was a hardware modification anyways.

Wow, that's impressive. At only 17 years old. This kid will have a lot of great job offers coming his way.

That's why I don't quite understand what exactly the deal with att&t entails. It's not like Apple needed at&t to launch the phone. They have everything they need at their disposable in terms of marketing, distribution channels, support etc. Why not just sell them through regular retail channels and let att&t, t mobile, Rogers, O2, Orange etc deal with activating them?

I think Apple has some sort of out clause. Being tied down for 5 years with a closed system seems a little un Apple.

My understanding is that Apple receives a portion of all the revenues generated from iPhone plans. So that would include the cost of the phone, the phone plan, data charges, etc..

If the iPhone is available for use on any network, then it decreases the amount of money coming in.
