Default Vehicle Registration Question:

I sold my old vehicle and just bought a pre-owned vehicle, and I have changed my insurance policy. My question is, I heard there is a 2 week grace period to get the registration taken care of, and I'm wondering if this is true and if so if someone can link me to the facts about this. I've searched the alberta registries website and can't find anything about it.

Anyone with some help would be greatly appreciated. I need 100% facts here, not so much opinions or thoughts, because of the seriousness of the situation. Thanks in advance to anyone who knows.

Not sure I follow. Registration is independent of insurance, is it not? I've changed insurance companies without amending my registration (I think). What's the hold up with getting the registration taken care of?

You get 90 days to register your vehicle in Alberta if you're establishing residency in Alberta. That's the only grace period I was able to find (s. 48.1 of the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation).

Haha, ok let me try to make this a little clearer:

I had a sunfire insured and registered. I just bought a ford explorer, and changed my insurance policy to insure the explorer and to uninsure the sunfire. I need to know how long I have to register the explorer.

Thanks dude!

Just remember to have a bill of sale with you if you get pulled over. Cops won't be too believing if the vehicle is unregistered and there's no bill of sale..

No problem. At least you have the new vehicle insured right? Just making sure, because a friend of mine thought he had 14 days for that as well. I found out he was driving without insurance for nearly a week!

You have 14 days from the bill of sale date. Make sure you carry your B.O.S and insurance with you as well, also make sure you transfer the plate over to the vehicle you bought...

Yeah that 90 days is for if you came from out of province. Many a youngin from BC comes to Alberta and clings to his BC insurance for as long as he can. But if it can be proven that you've been in Alberta living here for 90 days and haven't registrered or insured your vehichle in Alberta....bad things.

But in your case I'd get that registration swapped over A.S.A.P. Actually reminds me that I better go do mine on Friday. Here I'd been hoping to have moved out of province before this came due. Now I'll have to pay full amount, sell my house 2 days later and only be eligible to get like 35 back because after you register thay keep 50% of the amount or some stupid government scam.

Transfer of plates
86(1) If ownership of a private passenger vehicle passes from one person to another, the new owner may operate, or permit another person to operate, the newly acquired motor vehicle while it is displaying a licence plate that issued to the new owner with respect to the registration of another private passenger vehicle.
(2) If ownership of a commercial vehicle passes from one person to another, the new owner may drive, or permit another person to drive, the newly acquired vehicle while it is displaying a licence plate issued to the new owner with respect to the registration of another vehicle of the same class of commercial vehicle.
(3) The licence plate may be displayed on the newly acquired vehicle for not more than 14 days from the date its ownership passes to the new owner if the new owner intends
(a) to apply to register the vehicle, and
(b) to have the displayed licence plate reissued for use on the vehicle.
(4) The owner or operator of the vehicle shall carry
(a) proof of ownership of the newly acquired vehicle,
(b) a valid financial responsibility card relating to the vehicle, and
(c) proof that the licence plate is issued in respect of a vehicle registered as owned by that owner.
(5) A person to whom a licence plate is issued may apply to the Registrar to transfer the plate to another vehicle to be registered in the applicant’s name if the application is made within 14 days after the applicant becomes the owner of the other vehicle.
(6) Subsections (2) and (3) do not apply if the vehicle is a commercial vehicle used for the transportation of goods or passengers for compensation.

read your policy wording its in their. there are conditions but it is in there. Most dealerships wont let you take the car before you switch insurance though. in policy wording look under newly acquired vehicle.

this is the SPF 1 which is the standard across Alberta

http://www.finance.gov.ab.ca/publica...olicy_2007.pdf

bottom of page 14 if you use the search at the top. page 12 if you go by the page numbers after the cover

Quote:
b) A Newly Acquired Automobile – an automobile, ownership of which is acquired by the insured and, within fourteen days following the date of it delivery to him, notified to the Insurer in respect of which the insured has no other valid insurance, if either it replaces an automobile described in the application or the Insurer insures (in respect of the section or subsection of the Insuring Agreements under which claim is made) all automobiles owned by the Insured at such delivery date and in respect of which the Insured pay any additional premium required; provided however, that insurance hereunder shall not apply if the Insured is engaged in the business of selling automobiles;
so if you have 2 cars and one is at one company and another is at a different company this clause doesn't take effect, all vehicles have to be insured by the same insurance company.

Thanks for clarifying. I'll have to take your word for it, as that paragraph you quoted is full of some horrible legaleese.
There's quite a few people I'm going to have to tell about this one. Even my own broker said I couldn't wait. Seems to be the norm these days though. No one actually knows everything about the product they sell, just the bare mininums required.
So basically, it's saying you have 14 days since purchase, and if for example you insure it on the 14th day, you pay additional premium for the prior 14 days on top of the regular premium?

you pay for the coverage you would have paid for if you had insured it when you first bought it
