For a Blues lover like me, here are some recommended albums:
Howlin' Wolf - "Moanin' In the Moonlight" & "Howlin' Wolf [aka The Rocking Chair album]" & "The Real Folk Blues" -> as a side note, many of the rock albums recommended in this thread contain covers of Howlin' Wolf songs from these albums, if anybody's interested in the original tracks.
Muddy Waters - Any album or compilation
Sonny Boy Williamson (both I and II) - Any complilation of tracks
Little Walter - Any compilation
Robert Johnson - "The Complete Recordings"
Son House - Any compilation
Jimmy Reed - Any compilation
Edit: John Lee Hooker - Any album or compilation
(Anybody interested in the roots of Rock music, should listen to any of the above artists.)
Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble - Any album
Taj Mahal - "Taj Mahal"

Probably already mentioned but...
Tool - Lateralus (or any album. 10,000 days is also amazing but IMO Lateralus is their masterpiece).
Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
Thom Yorke - Eraser

Did you happen to catch the movie "Black Snake Moan"? Great Son stuff in that movie.

Sleep Terror - Any material you can find
Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium

Impressive to see somebody else who's familiar with these bands. I own both Acid Bath CDs, all Arsis CDs, Epitaph, and a Sleep Terror t-shirt.
On the topic of the Foo Fighters... as much as I like them... I'm having issues over the fact that they are ADAMANT HIV deniers.
I mean seriously, what the hell?

The first time I listened to Romantic Warrior I thought my stereo was broken, what an awesome record. Back in high school my quintet played Birdland off Heavy Weather too thanks for bringin back some good memories..
To add to the jazz fusion category, gotta throw out my three fav Metalwood albums: 2, 3 and Chronic.

A shameless plug for my own album:
"Burn" by Shadowbox
It's either a cross between Tears for Fears and Radiohead, or Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins, depending on which of my friends you believe. You can listen to samples off of iTunes and other web-based music download sites, or visit my band site at www.shadowboxrecords.com.

I'm a huge new wave and progressive rock fan. I think there are a few underrated albums that I suggest:
It's My Life - Talk Talk
Sparkle in the Rain - Simple Minds
90125 - Yes
Cry - Simple Minds
Reach the Beach - The Fixx
A few mainstream/alternative suggestions:
Ganging up on the Sun - Guster
Hopes and Fears - Keane
Have a Nice Day - Stereophonics
The Man Who - Travis

Play "Burn Your Life Down", thats my favourite off of the new album, although the whole thing is good.
Other albums by them include:
The Business of Art
If It Was You
So Jealous
For me its close between If It was You and So Jealous, but all of their albums are good to play from start to finish.
