Fire in Royal Oak

But then I saw the address and thought "Whoo, gald it's not my house".

Yeah, I can actually get to downtown Cochrane (if such a thing actually exists) quicker than I can get to downtown Calgary.

Wowsers I am over by the co-op in RockyRidge so I am even further west. and yes Cochrane is closer then downtown.

That must be near the RockyRidge Enterance in those Excel Homes.

Just prior to 13:00 this afternoon, The Calgary Fire
Department was called to 197 Royal Elm Road NW for reports of
a house fire. The fire was reported through the 9-1-1 system
by a neighbour.

While enroute, firefighters could see heavy smoke from the
area and alerted the Public Safety Communications Centre.
When crews arrived, one house was fully engulfed in flames
and the two houses on either side were also on fire. The
Incident Commander immediately called a second alarm for
additional firefighters and determined that protecting
exposures was critical to preventing additional homes from
becoming involved.

As far as fire crews could determine, there was no one home
at the time of arrival. The 30 firefighters and 9 apparatus
called to the scene were effective in limiting fire spread to
additional homes. Unfortunately, three homes are considered
a complete loss. At least six other homes sustained heat
damage primarily to the exterior vinyl siding.

The homes on Royal Elm Road NW are newly constructed, have
vinyl siding exteriors, and are relatively close together.
These characteristics definitely factored into the size and
intensity of the blaze. In February of this year, The City of
Calgary opened a new fire station which serves the
communities of the area including Royal Oak. With enhanced
fire protection and apparatus innovations used at the
incident, the firefighters were very successful in containing
this blaze.

CPS, ATCO, City Waterworks, EMS, and ENMAX were also on scene
to assist at the incident. Fire crews battled the blaze for
almost three hours and remain on scene extinguishing hot
spots and controlling flames.

Fire investigators will use the services of excavating
equipment to tear apart the rubble in search for a cause of
the blaze. Preliminary fire loss estimates are upward of two
million dollars.

Looking at how close the houses are together where I am living now, I think we are going to see a lot more of these multi-house fires. It's just stupid how the places across the street from me are about 2 feet apart where the roof peaks are.

There was a huge fire in Edmonton a month or two ago where an apartment building being built went up in flames. About 12 houses surrounding it all have heat damage and completely blackened/charred walls. The number of lots in a subdivision are getting too high. Sure you want to make a buck, but where does it end? In some of these places all you can get is a 1 car driveway and no parking on the street.

I saw something about vinyal siding being a poor fire ######ant somewhere. In fact it was blamed for a fire spreading in Edmonton.

The area that is North of Crowchild Tr., South of Country Hills Blvd./112 Ave, East of Twelve Mile Coulee Road (City Limit), and West of Stoney Tr. N.W.

If you're still confused, another way to look at it is if you keep going WB on Country Hills Blvd you will eventually hit a dead end (unless they've changed it now) and that's where Rocky Ridge is.
