Everyone is talking trade now if they crash out, but I don't know why he would have signed a new deal only to ask out a few months later - in what world does he want to go to a new team that has given away most of its prospect and pick base, or a lot of talent of their roster to trade for him when he could have gone there this summer for free and played for a much better team with more assets to support the roster moving forward.

He could easily have let his contract run out and gone to a place like Tampa this summer, gotten his revenge over florida and had a much better shot at a cup the next few years.

I think he cares a ton about how he appears to the public. If he left as a UFA he'll lose his "good guy" image in Edmonton. If they get something in return then its the org's fault, not his

I guess if he says he wants to leave and will only go to one team they might not have to back up the Brinks truck and maybe there is a gentleman's agreement that they will trade him if he asks, but Katz is an absolute scumbag and exactly the kind of guy you could see hard balling him or going back on his word even though he signed well below market. I feel like he is for sure stuck there for another 27 months and the Oilers have only just started to fall off the cliff, beyond him seems like their whole core is 30-35 and gonna decline pretty rapidly in the next few

Here’s the thing; at some point if Mavi is not going to re-sign, the oilers pretty much have to trade him because if he walks away greasepiggies get nothing. If they trade him, without a sign and trade, why would you make yourself the oilers by gutting your roster to get him?

I wonder if the “good guy” image carries all the way to the end so he can sign without gutting the team.

If Mavi bails out on the Oilers, so will Sidesaddle. Not that they’d go as a tandem, but that neither one would want to stay in Stinktown. With the writing on the wall, maybe even Leon wants out first.

Trade Zary, Coronato and Whitecloud for McAvi. Oilers need to throw something in too.

I can't see Katz agreeing to trade McDavid. Bowman doesn't want to be remembered as the guy who traded McDavid.

I think he plays out his contact and signs elsewhere. I don't see Edmonton villifying him. He gave up several million to help the team build a winner. He gave it his all. After 13 years, it is his right to chase a cup elsewhere.

He wouldn't ask for a trade this year, but you can bet if this Oilers team which is one of the oldest in the league, with no prospect depth and not a lot of interesting trade collateral flames out this year so to speak, that there will be a very uncomfortable meeting between Canna's management team and the Oilers Management team.

They will want to know what the plan is from a pushing the Oilers to a cup perspective. What's going to happen from a coaching perspective, what's going to happen from a GM's perspective, and what's Conna's time line on wanting out if they don't do what he wants.

Some might say that once you have accepted Katz’s red rose, you are bound!

But it would mean he'd be less remembered for covering up sexual assault in Chicago.

I don't buy that. I think he is just a guy who wants what is best for the organization that drafted him. Unfortunately, they can't get it done and he's been there for 11 seasons when this one ends. He didn't owe them any sort of loyalty; he paid his dues. Now, he has to lie in the bed he made. Can't imagine him being too thrilled to see how things have turned out.

"Easy to say in hindsight."

No, Connor. You shouldn't done your homework on Bowman, and you've had a plethora of coaches and goaltenders throughout your time with Edmonton to know that you have never received the help that you should've been given. Should have jumped ship the minute he could have but he's not exactly bright.

Trying to decide, if I could only pick one, would I rather Vegas or Edmonton miss.

Better draft pick, or pure joy?

What a Sophies Choice…

Again my third hand info is that McDavid’s exit has been orchestrated by his camp, in agreement with the Oilers, for a while (ie 3+ years) now. It allowed the Oilers with a defined timeline to buildup a team to contend. Going to the Finals the last two years have obviously gotten close. The two year cap friendly contract was signed to give the Oilers the time to talk with other teams for a return and plan for him not being part of the roster, and, other teams line up things to acquire him.

It’s why there was no stress as the signing of the deal into September wasn’t a big deal to him or the Oilers.
So, he’s around until at latest, Summer 2027 but if he decides or the Oilers find a deal this summer, it could happen earlier. Again, the Olympics and 4 Nations have confirmed to him what it’s going to be like to be in the actual media spotlight and with a properly run setup with coaching and other organizational intangibles he’s missed out on in his pro career.

I just saw the Oilers have never won the Pacific in the McDavid era? 5x 2nd place finishes though. Always the bridesmaid never the bride behaviour.

With Pissy Von Lederhosen bunkered down in the mad scientist’s Bavarian lair and the mixed narrative emerging, this could be a far more interesting off-season than normal.

McDavid can complain all he wants about the coaching I think he's thinking it only applies to the other player and not him. He wants a coach to implement a system for everyone but him..

Oh I want Edmonton to miss without a doubt. Combined with the fact they dont even have their 1st and Mcdavid is a ticking time bomb? All of that alone is worth a few spots in the 1st round to me

So, a completely un-coachable player throws shade at the coaching? Checks out.
