You guys must be fun at parties. Just so I'm clear someone said "hah that was funny" and it turned into a Facebook mom pile on? Doesn't take much to get the knives out eh? Smoke a cigarette and relax, it's ok to find humour in the dark.
Well, since ww2 and pearl harbour is a source of great national shame for Japanese people there is just no part of this that is funny, with or without their pm in the room.
No. I have no time for this point of view whatsoever.
Because the alternative is what, soak in the depressing misery in this crap all the goddamned time like some folks on here? Sorry, been there, done that with the first Trump term (and first year and a half of the 'rona era). If I have zero impact on something and I can find something humorous in the sheer absurdity of something, as little as it is, I'd rather that than steep in the negative all the time.

Someone who has a deep respect for Japanese people, some who I consider great friends, and shudder to see their national shame be brought up by this orange troll. That’s who.
It wasn’t a funny quip, not even close, it was discgraceful. The fact there’s even some discussion about whether it was funny shows how desensitized we have become to this level of behaviour from him.

We all think his behaviour is disgraceful. Welcome to Canada, where we can change absolutely nothing about it.
You can feel however you want to feel, none of us are suggesting otherwise. Don't tell us we have to be miserable too.
In the end, I don't really care, I'm not offended. I just didn't think it was funny, as much as Maga desperatly wanted it to be, since they basically lap up any garbage their godking spews.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong or morally questionable with finding humour in what he said, I just think doing so outs you as a bit of a Simple Jack.

I agree. It's okay to joke about anything but at a minimum it should be funny and, if possible, smart. This was not even intended to be funny, it was intended to be insulting. That's the MAGAt brand: say something insulting and dress it up as a joke only to claim that comedy is being persecuted and then act like the great defender of the comic arts. It's no surprise some people are insulted just as it's no surprise that others are lapping up the opportunity to see themselves as some sort of free-speech hero. It's a stalwart in the latest rendition of the Culture Games.

Plus it still doesn't even make sense as a joke. No one has been able to explain the joke part. It was an attempt at a gotcha! but if you have more three brain cells you can immediately understand it doesn't even work as that, because duh, Japan was the enemy, not an ally at the time. There is no gotcha, so there is nothing to even consider laughing at.

I don't recall anything Trump has ever said has made me audibly laugh with him. And I'd say the more he tries the cringier it gets, especially since half the paltry jokes he attempts are unclever and mean spirited, and with him being unable to navigate anything remotely self-deprecating that eliminates a lot of potential for intentional humour.
Humour usually requires a clever or unexpected subversion of social expectations. But I guess when you're a walking subversion with the social comprehension that makes someone with aspergers look like a natural, it's particularly difficult to make a funny.
The only time I may have come close to a chuckle was when he had a moment of open introspection admitting he might not go to heaven. So maybe since it's so rare that he says anything true, perhaps then it's his brushes with actual honesty that makes for the funniest material. Those moments are rare though.
What he gives sure makes for great material for the actual comedians out there, that's for sure.
But I'm pretty sure Michael Scott has better comedic execution.
