That stupid motherf-cking spaceship noise that those sh-tty Toyota RAV4 PHEVs make. It's like the passive-aggressive equivalent to the noise a base Audi A4 with a crackle-tune makes. And living in downtown, they're goddamned everywhere because they're The Official Car of Uber Drivers™.

Similiar challenges in IT. Operations want a proposal on X - Send info and proposals on X - Crickets - Short amount of time before they want X proposal completed, they finally send back signed proposals and its urgent now.
F off. Drilling is the worst for this.

Not a gear grinder per se, but I appreciate the 3v2 "thanks" poll re: Monte Cristos
I only vote in CP polls to try to create ties. So that was a fun changeup.

All the Toyota hybrids make that HBO opening hum sound while driving slowly. Sad thing is it’s not even a requirement to have it in Canada, but there’s no user setting to disable it, short of clipping the speaker wire - but there is probably a built-in self test that checks if it’s operating and nags the driver about it.

I have to assume you were also the only couple in that restaurant at that time of night who's relationship was lasting more than an hour, so, congrats.

The vehicle performs a basic circuit resistance check to see if there is a load (ie: speaker) plugged into the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System harness in the front grille, much like how a vehicle checks for perished incandescent / halogen turn signal and brake lamp bulbs (which is also why early LED replacement bulbs used to flash periodically). A few people have made defeat plugs for ~$35 in parts.

I thought "$35 for a resistor!?" before I clicked the link, but now I see they bought an official Toyota one. And a plug, which is probably better than the hack job I'd do with wire cutters, some shrink tube and a "meh, close enough" resistor salvaged from somewhere...
Alternatively, you can probably plaster enough peanut butter in there it'd shut up, and still be visible to the computer.

Yeah, using official Toyota connectors and terminals cranks up the cost. In theory, you could just stuff a resistor in the plug and tape over it to prevent water ingress, but the resistor is gonna heat up and could pop quickly, especially if it is directly taped over. I like the elegance of using the OE stuff.
A 10w 4ohm resistor (matches the speaker exactly) with a built-in heatsink is $10 for a pair of 'em off of Bezos-Mart, but you don't need to be that precise with it.

I always thought that spaceship sound was some component rubbing over another component because it's reminiscent of a rotor sound at times. That's an artificial sound? WTF! Why?

NHTSA requires vehicles running exclusively on electric power (either a PHEV running in electric mode or a full-time BEV) to emit a noise in order to alert visually impaired pedestrians that a vehicle is coming. Some other countries do too, but Canada doesn't have any such requirement.
Of course, it is only required to make that noise below a certain speed, and seems to have been inconsistently enforced. Our I-Pace doesn't make that noise, and only makes a small 'sonar'-like noise when reversing.

You guys seem to think that the demographic that buys a RAV4 or a Prius are the types that give a #### about the weird annoying sound and would do something about it. They probably don’t even notice it themselves.

They’re the equivalent of the domestic car owners that triple honk when locking their doors.

1. It's my gear grinder, I hate it.
2. You are underestimating the desire of people to find and congregate with people who enjoy the same things they do. There exist enthusiast circles for pretty much every car. The Reliant Robin has an enthusiast group.
3. I found the defeat harness for the sh-tty spaceship noise on a RAV4 enthusiast forum. Someone cared enough to do it.

When you drive up to a red light and it's three lane and there are three cars, one in each lane.
One is a CRV, the other is a Rav4 and then a BMW?
Who do you get behind?

Assuming that order left to right, I think the CRV is more of a wild card than the RAV4. You know the RAV4 is going to be slow. The BMW will be last off the line because they'll be on their phone, but when they turn right half a block up without signalling, you will be completely blocked with the RAV4 at your left. So I'd gamble on the CRV.
