A Catholic bishop in Holland has suggested that God be called Allah to relieve political tensions within the country.

Like an opinion expressed in the article, I don't see any benefit to it either. The root problems of religious strifes are still going to be the same whether you call God, Allah or Allah, God.

Plus, how do you enforce it? If I'm religious, and I've been calling my god 'God' my entire life, why would I change it just to satisfy a religion I don't even follow or really care that much about?

You can practice tolerance through the actions you take; not from wrongfully adopting practices you don't, and shouldn't have to, preach.

Definitely a possibility. So when an individual's life is ended in the name of religion, people will say 'he got Phaneuf'd'

That is pretty silly. The word Allah is the direct translation of the word God from English to Arabic. So if you wanted to say God in Arabic, it would be Allah. It is not a special name for a certain type of God, it is the exact same thing just in different languages.

I don't see how it would matter. Sunnis and Shi'ites both call God "Allah", and it sure hasn't relieved tension.

Yes the fact that one religion doesn't call it's God "Allah" is clearly the root of this problem. That should fix things right up.

As has been pointed out above, everything in Islam is in Arabic, so it's not calling God "Allah" it's saying God in Arabic.

I found that interesting that no matter what the country or language, there is only one language of the religion and it's Arabic.

Catholicism was the same way until 1960s. The majority of muslims do not speak Arabic.

Yup.

Catholics, when attending mass, had to use Latin. Mass isn't said in English or French or Italian or Spanish, it's in latin.

I'm sure they all shoot the ##### in their native languages when the leave mass though, right?

I can't imagine many indonesians are speaking Arabic.

Jews and Christians also speak Arabic.

Once again the church proves its uselessness and complete and utter farcity as the mouth piece of the King James Bible.

A lot of Orthodox churches also used to hold mass in Greek in countries that are not Greek speaking.

But what you say is only partly true. While Latin was the main language of the Catholic church, it was not uncommon to have mass in the vernacular prior to the 60s. I know a Ukrainian family in Manitoba that founded a Ukrainian Catholic church in the ealry 1900s that allegedly serviced a 200 mile radius because they held mass in Ukrainian.

My father does recall in Croatia before the 1960s, mass was always in Latin, but prescriptions from doctors also used to be written in Latin. It was everywhere.

Latin wasn't only exclusive to the church though. It was the language of medicine and science as well. You used to have to study and learn Latin in those disciplines. It was the language of the elite for both secular and non-secular segments of society.

Yeah, these mullahs, in non-Arabic countries, can interpret the Koran whatever they want, just like the old Catholics did before the Bible was translated and the printing press came along.

No, but they must understand it to some degree since all the prayers are announced in Arabic. No matter where I was in Semarang I could hear the loud speaker at prayer time. The early morning one sucked until I got used to hearing it.
