MLB umpires call balls/strikes based on race: new study
An interesting new study appears to demonstrate major league umpires are likely to call balls and strikes based on race.

75 pitches per team? That seems very low. Or do they mean, 75 pitches that need the umpires decision. ie. not an obvious ball or strike?

Interesting that it didn't distinguish that the offending umpires were white, simply that it happened whenever the pitcher and umpire were the same race. How many black umpires are there in MLB?
I'd also argue that if you're looking for discrimination, even on a subconscious level, you'd need to look at the matchups: if there is discrimination, you'd expect to see a white umpire call the most strikes when it's a white pitcher against a black batter; a moderate amount of strikes when it's a white pitcher against a white batter, or a black pitcher against a black batter; and the least amount of strikes when a black pitcher goes against a white batter.

They also saying that Black umps are more favroable to Blacks and so on... just that no matter what race the Ump is he goign to favro his same race.
What they SHOULD be figuring out is how many "missed" or "bad" calls the Ump made to favro his race. What happens if the Pitchers are the rasicts and the black/white pitcher pitches better to whites/blacks rather than blacks.

So is that why a guy like Derek Jeter always seems to get favorable calls from the umpires? Here I thought it was based on his track record as a hitter.

I'm trying to remember the scandals of last year. Lance Armstrong, Tocchet, Italian match-fixing, Duke lacrosse team to name a few.

I'm not sure what the Lance Armstrong "Controversy" is. Probably the most tested athlete in sports is not found to be cheating....yup, sounds controversial to me.
And the Duke lacrosse team was found to be completely basless.
Granted I'd agree that the Italian match-fixing and Tocchet are not small potatos.
