And making it better! Call it the Monte Cristo lite. I think they dip that middle bread in the egg wash but don't cook it so its just raw egg mush in the middle with a quarter loaf of bread. The meat cheese bread ratio is nonsense.

I googled “monte cristo” because I couldn’t believe that claim, and just looked at the photos… I stopped counting at 20 images, not one with 3 slices of bread. Because that would be stupid and terrible.

My father owned a few restaurants back in the day and I can confirm that Monte Cristo's did have three slices. It's possibly due to people caring more about carbs now that it's turned to more of a traditional two slice sandwich.

You know I really used to like this sandwich when I was young and worked at my dad's restaurants and I realized I haven't had one of these in decades. I think I need to change that.

Your dad made them wrong. It didn't "turn into" because of carbs. Come on man, that's some odd rationalization. I was eating two slicers in the 90's.

Well, however you like it, you absolutely need to change that. They are amazing, I make them at home quite often.

I eat food and I've never seen a three slice Monte Cristo. That's just wrong.

Thank this post to vote to change Fuzz's user title to "The Count of Monte Cristos".

I usually try to avoid voting for things but this is a clear winner.

Also, shout out to Wormius for voting both 2 AND 3 slices are the best.

They’re both the best. It’s like Sophie’s Choice.

Actually I have never heard of a 3-slice Monte Cristo. My curiosity is piqued. What is being separated by the middle bread slice?

It's a sandwich where the filling is more bread!

Maple syrup makes my abs pop, I dig it.

It's a sandwich made with a savoury French toast recipe -- sans the cinnamon and brown sugar. Some Monte Cristos I've had were served with a dusting of icing sugar on top. I don't think the addition of a little maple syrup changes the nutritional profile all that much, this thing is how you order a meal and dessert in a single menu item.

Today I learned there were no times before the 90s.

The Monte Christo was popularized in the 1940s by the Brown Derby Restaurants in California. The original recipe - and the standard for decades - uses three slices of white bread.

Yup, Monte Christo sandwiches used three slices of bread. Fact. I guess that's changed now? I haven't had one in a looooong time.

That and the clubhouse were the only sandwiches I recall having three slices when I worked at restaurants in the 80's. I'm pretty sure clubhouse sandwiches are still three slices right?
