Not surprisingly, Trump and his clown show administration are trying to replace the tariff revenue they've lost due to the recent Supreme Court decision. So they're now launching trade investigations of 60+ countries around the world including Canada.

"We are trying to move very quickly," U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC Friday. "We are trying to move in a matter of months."

Greer's office announced Wednesday that it was launching investigations of the European Union and a handful of other countries under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

A Thursday evening news release from the office expanded the list of countries targeted by the investigations. It says the department will look at whether the countries named have policies or practices that "are unreasonable or discriminatory and burden or restrict U.S. commerce."

Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump's favourite tariff tool, which he used for his "Liberation Day" tariffs and fentanyl-related duties on Canada, Mexico and China.

Trump is hoping to implement longer-term tariffs through Section 301 investigations but the process does require public consultations and reports.

Greer said that "if we find that countries have been involved in unfair trading practices" — such as subsidies, excess capacity or forced labour — "we can quantify that harm to U.S. commerce and then try to resolve that issue with that country."

If the country doesn't resolve the issue, Greer said, the Trump administration will impose tariffs.

It's not immediately clear what the 301 investigation of Canada could cover. There are long-standing irritants in the Canada-U.S. trading relationship and Trump has complained repeatedly about Canada's dairy supply management system.

It’s hilarious watching this administration completely flailing and embarrassing themselves with this Iran fiasco. Trump essentially being forced to beg other allies in the area to help get the strait of Hormuz open; allies who have all been kicked in the teeth over the past year with his stupid illegal tariff nonsense.

Not surprisingly, no one has signed up to help him so far.

Tariffs, NATO and his threats to take countries over, and generally being ignorant. Obviously, to top it all off, the reason that the Strait needs this is because he decided to start this without running it by these allies that he needs now. It’s a problem of his own making, after behaving like an ass for the past year (or more).

It seemed far-fetched to many at the time. Now Mr. Trump himself seems to have his doubts about how effective the protesters could be.

Both Mr. Trump and Admiral Cooper of Central Command warned the Israelis against striking the big oil tanks outside of Tehran, fearing that such an attack would trigger the Iranians to strike more energy targets around the region in retaliation, according to multiple people briefed on the situation.
Mr. Netanyahu ignored the advice, and Israel hit the depots a week ago Saturday, triggering huge blazes and setting off an initial surge in oil prices. Inside the White House, officials became convinced that the Israeli leader wanted dramatic scenes of Tehran covered in the black smoke of destruction.
