Sir...I say Sir...I am a Star Trek fan. All one needs is some clever writing to 'hand wave' away something as inconvenient as a 'Death.'
Twin Brother? Evil Twin 'Dirtburne?' Washburne's Father who taught his son everything joins the crew? Long lost Uncle? Unknown brother? Alliance Clone of Washburne that the crew needs to rescue?
I could do this all day.

Watch the pilot, Serenity. It's a 2h pilot but actually runs 1h26 minutes. If after watching that you think it's the sort of show you might like, watch the rest. It peaks around episodes 5-10 as you get to know the characters better IMO but the pilot is nevertheless a pretty solid representation of the show overall.
EDIT: I just realized this might cause confusion. The pilot (S1E1) is called Serenity. The movie from 2006, which takes place AFTER the show, is also called Serenity. You're looking for the former, not the latter... You wouldn't want to watch the movie before the show, probably.
That was kinda dumb of Whedon in retrospect.

Yeah I figured it out. The funny thing is the order of the episodes on Disney are in some strange order.
Disney+ has them in the order they were meant to be seen. Fox screwed around with it and aired them out of order. The original pilot episode was the final episode Fox aired. Three of the episodes that were produced were never aired by Fox and weren't officially available in North America until the DVD set was released.
Don't watch them in broadcast order, watch them in the order they're on Disney+.

Part of the reason I wasn't able to get into this show when it was on TV is because of this. The continuity was so off that it was hard to follow and I gave up. When my buddy showed up with the DVDs a couple years later I couldn't get enough.
Fox really didn't want this show to succeed.

Shameless stolen off reddit, with a hint from the podcast suggesting it is a reboot:
Quote:
Here's from the transcript of that podcast episode (originally aired Nov. 19, 2025) you're referring to: Nathan: "If you rebooted Firefly, would you bring it back or would you reboot it?" Alan: "I would do the thing that you know we talked about one day in your house. It was a fan fiction we read. I didn't read the whole thing."
"I read page one, which was somebody lands on some distant moon somewhere. There's no habitation. They're making their way out to this little shack of a cabin, and they knock on the door and older Mal Reynolds opens the door and says, what?"
"He says, we need you. That's how you start it. It's rebooted."
"You're now flying the spaceship. You've got a new spaceship, probably a Firefly class. I don't know."
"My guess is yes. You come and you find us all, all the ones that are still alive. I'm currently dead. "
"But you find the other guys and then you put together a new crew." Nathan: "Now, that was very good." Alan: "It was a fan."
Everyone has indeed had a knock at the door but Alan.

I get that it's Fox, but I never understood how the hell this decision was made.
If you hate the show, don't air it. But to just throw it out in some noticably random order just for spite????
I know they thought that space battles meant ratings. Okay. But then they're just saying their entire audience is going to go "blam blam is good. Talking is bad"?
