....or McKenna in Calgary? Might make more sense as McKenna is a winger.
Yeah McKenna might be a draw for him. Really sucks the Flames pretty much wasted a full year with their 96pt season that paused the rebuilding moves for 18 months. They likely would have been closer if not for that year but at least it was largely due to Wolf being a stud.
If McDavid leaves the Oil I think it will be the year before he is a free agent and will want to go to a team with a core that is either about to or just recently entered contention.

Honestly unless they somehow bottom'd out last year to a top 4 pick I don't know how much it matters.
There's not a massive gap between the guys taken in that 5-17 range and Cole Reschny.
I would take Schaefer, Misa, Frondel and Desnoyers over him (the top 4)
Within the rest of guys taken ahead of him I probably break it down something like:
Would definitely take over Reschney
Martone
Would probably take over Reschney
Martin
Hagens (though he's been underwhelming)
And that's kinda it. The rest of the guys are all in the ballpark in terms of quality of prospect.
So I get it in some ways, but when I actually dig deeper, I don't think they would be much further ahead, again, unless they were in the top 3 to 4 of the draft.

Flames get Reschny regardless he was picked with the Devils pick. Would a top 10 pick be more valuable than Potter? I think definitely yes. The Habs get pick 32 had the Flames pick been top 10

Ah you are right. Forgot about that dynamic.
So the gap is wider for sure. But not in a really meaningful way. Let's say it's Roger McQueen over Potter. Both centers. Both with risks. McQueen is the better prospect for sure.

Could’ve legitimately had Hagens (he went 7), O’Brien (8th) or McQueen (10th)

Nylander+Knies+other pieces would go back to Edmonton.
Wouldn't that be wonderful, William Nylander gets traded to Edmonton, only to exercise his full No-Movement Clause and refuse to play with the Oilers just like his father 20 years prior.

So I was thinking today. Assume the following (and my question afterwards)
Calgary drafts 1/2 this year and takes McKenna
Calgary again tanks next year and gets one of the centers or DuPont
Makar comes home
Do we have enough cap space and pieces in place we can attract McDavid after his contract runs out? We have the goalie, and would have stellar defence. Young pieces and drafting well with a deep pipeline.
Is that enough to convince him to come and join his hated rival to chase cups? Can we pull it off? Would you want to?
Hell no!

If that ever were to happen, it would be amazing Oiler fan tears. If he were to win a cup in Calgary, it would be maximum Oiler fan tears. It would be the greatest timeline.
