And he had three takeaways and two giveaways. That's a net positive!

“I’m really excited,” Castagna said in an exclusive chat with Daily Hive. “One of the things that was happening after the trade happened was all my teammates were calling me like ‘Hey man, are you okay?’ I said ‘Guys, honestly, I’m super happy. I’m excited.’

“Calgary’s definitely a spot that I can see myself being in, and I do want to be there. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the organization. I’ve spoken to all the leadership from the top down and they seem like really good people. There could be some opportunity there for me, which is really cool in itself.”

While his focus remains on finishing the college season, he made it clear he would welcome the opportunity to join the Flames organization if the chance arises.

“The only thing I can give you at the moment is that I’m really happy to be a part of the organization,” he said. “I could see myself being a Flame. There’s no barriers there. If the opportunity presents itself, I don’t see why not.”

He will bounce back in Utah for sure and think the deal will end up looking really good for them.

Yup. It was the same thing after Ras had his terrible season and people figured he was done, but he bounced back the season after. These guys are solid defencemen and bad seasons happen.

He's regressed since he got to Vegas.

I think fit is a big part of it for dmen.

Weegar fits well in Utah. Durzi, Sergachev, Weegar, Schmidt, Marino, and Cole is a pretty balanced d-core that has a good balance in terms of play styles and roles.

To me Vegas has 3 dmen that are all too similar.

Theodore, Hanifin, and Andersson are all too similar, and have similar flaws, and now they are trying to fix that by playing them on 3 different pairs with more defensive guys in McNabb, Korczak, and Lauzon.

And Andersson just hasn't fit. He's down to 20:26 average TOI over the last 5 games here.

Game 82 might be a wild one this year.

There's a world where we see Castagna, Wiebe, Reschny, Wyttenbach, (Tyson Gross) in the lineup.

Do it, lets have some fun.

NCAA Championship game is on April 11th. #2 ranked North Dakota has as good a shot as any school to be playing that night. The Flames have 3 games later that week, so Wiebe and Reschny could join the Flames after a National title.

Cornell is #9 in the NPI, so likely heading to the Regionals, which starts on March 26th until the 29th. Castagna should be playing at Cornell until the end of the month, or more if they win their bracket

They have 47 players under contract this season, so they could only sign 3 to play this season under the 50 contract limit. They could sign others to contracts that start next season and play a couple games with the Wranglers this year.

I think Hunter Laing needs to be signed before June 1st, 2026 as well. Unless he is committed to university, but I don't see that anywhere. Assuming the Flames want to sign him, but I don't see why not.

Would he count against the 50 contract limit?

I doubt Wyttenbach or Reschny sign for a game this year. But I could definitely see Castagna and Wiebe. And hopefully Gross.

It all depends on when the player's contract starts. If it's a 2025-26 contract, it counts against this year's limit. If it starts next season, it will only count against next year's limit.

I wouldn't be concerned with the 50 contract limit. The Wranglers have plenty of players that could wash out of the system this summer. Kirkland, Bishop, Kerins, and Morton may not be back up front and Miromanov could be passed on. Lots of options if pressed for slots.

Yeah, but that's this summer. It doesn't change the fact that they can only sign a maximum of 3 contracts for this season.

Can someone remind me about Gross - I don't recognize that name.

Yep, it's definitely the type of player/leader Weegar is. He was never that good at fighting though, trying to hold his own against the middle-weights.

As for Gross, this came out during the Caps game last night:

Oh thank you. Don't know how I missed that. I'll look him up!
