Instant Reaction: Capitals extinguish Flames with third period flurry

The Washington Capitals had a great first period on Monday night. Their opponents, the Calgary Flames, had a great second period. With the game up for grabs and tied after 40 minutes, the Capitals found another gear and pulled away from the visitors.
Washington scored four goals in the final frame and beat the Flames by a 7-3 score.

5 Things - Flames @ Rangers

It's a quick turnaround for the Flames, who contest Game Two of this five-game, Eastern swing this evening in the Big Apple.

And a chance to atone for a disappointing third period in the road trip opener, a contest that saw the Washington Capitals score a 7-3 victory in D.C. Monday night.

The game was certainly a let-down. One that got away after a valiant second-period comeback. A chance at a moralizing victory gone seemingly within the blink of an eye.

But amid all the changes to the Flames roster over the last week, there shine through encouraging signs for the road ahead. Youngster Matvei Gridin scored his fourth goal of the season after a slick setup from new defenceman Olli Määtta, and the Flames erased a three-goal, second period deficit with a trio of tallies in a span of 2:47.

FN’s mid-season Flames prospect updates: Artem Grushnikov

Artem Grushnikov came to the Calgary Wranglers as a mid-season addition in the 2023-24 season. He spent the majority of the year with the Texas Stars, then was included as part of the Chris Tanev trade in late February 2024. When he made it to Calgary, he joined the Wranglers for the last 20 games of the regular season. He’s been with Calgary’s AHL squad ever since as he works on furthering his development.

Unfortunately I agree, this is a big 2 points for the Rangers to distance themselves from us for draft slotting.

The Flames are the only team in the league without 10 road wins and the Rangers are one of two teams without 10 home wins (Vancouver is the other).

Big 4 point game.

Flames probably win this one, coming off a loss. Rangers coming off a win and being bad at home. Ready to let their fans down.

I'd also figured Cooley would win his game, Wolf would lose but that's out the window so we'll see.

There seemed to be more fire wagon hockey against the Caps than Huska usually allows which I found pretty entertaining while cheering for Parekh, Gridin, Zary, Coronato, etc. Maybe it works against the Rags? Either way, Go Flames!

A loss would help the Flames.

So apparently it’s guaranteed win night.

Shesterkin played last night.

Unfortunately, the Rangers are going to let in a lot of goals tonight because Quick has been god awful this year. Hoping for a track meet and a Flames loss, somehow.

I've never heard SH goals called PK goals before.

Is it a 4:30 start or 5:00? I'm seeing conflicting info, including during last night's game.

I presume there wasn't a morning skate today, but any news on who's moving in/out of the lineup?
