Is there still the 3 call up rule or did that go away? I can't remember.
They expanded it to 5 recalls instead of 4 in the new CBA. So the Flames will have 4 left after they call up Gridin + unlimited emergency recalls in case of injuries.

Something clearly off with Battaglia, doesn't seem like a guy at this point who is going to force his way onto the upper half of the Wranglers roster over the next couple of seasons. Might have jumped the gun a little signing him as quickly as they did.

Smart move to trade him for an older prospect who needs a change of scenery and they can find out if he has anything to contribute now, before the log jam starts.
Battaglia was beginning to look like a wasted contract spot, so it was good to replace that contract with a new face.

Yes, and one that they can make a decision on sooner than they would have on Battaglia as well.

Guaranteed call ups:
BRZ
Gridin

That leaves 3 for Othmann etc..

You can make 5 recalls after the deadline, but you can only have 4 recalled players on your roster at the same time.

Conroy made a comment in regards to the Curran deal about needing to stack prospects by age and by expected time for being in the NHL.
I think that this deal is as much part of that philosophy in that they have a number of prospects in the Battaglia age bracket but not a lot that are a couple of years older.

I think the other thing that that this trade means is that the Flames do not think that Stromgren is an NHL player. He would have gotten more time up if they thought he was, and Othmann basically fills the spot that he would have taken.

Also allows them to move on from Coleman in the summer because Othmann should be ready to step in as a third line winger.

Othmann has struggled all year and generally been terrible in the NHL. Obviously the Flames see something they like, and he obviously has talent and could rebound, but I don't think anyone should be counting on him replacing Blake Coleman next year and contributing on the 3rd line.

Othmann is already in the Wranglers lineup tonight in Palm Springs.

Even with the 5 recalls the flames can't have more than 23 guys on the voter is that right? Or do the rosters get expanded too?

No roster limit after the deadline, just the cap -- which isn't a problem for the Flames.

I’m not a pro scout but I did stay at a holiday inn express so I am bit of an expert and the few times I saw Othmann play he reminded me of a dollar store Sam Bennett.

Just saying.

That's perfectly fine as a 4th line LW. Let him muck it up a bit.

That's my only real concern with stockpiling so many prospects and draft picks so close together. There are only so many roster spots available and if you have to play some lower down the roster, you risk developing them into those kinds of players.

Conroy is smart and I think that is why he didn't mind trading for picks further into the future, as well as drafting out of different leagues (like goalies out of Russia for example), or players off to college.

The Othmann trade helps alleviate a possible upcoming logjam as well.

Battaglia was a huge surprise D+1 and a huge disappointment this year. Maybe the truth is in the middle?

Very much this,.although it wouldn't surprise me if there was some basic odds calculations going on as well.

Just based on averages, its also just very likely that a team thats great now is probably less great in the future. So the Avs pick has a good chance of looking a lot better in '28 than it does now.

On the other hand, Montreal for example is mid-tier team now, but they're looking like a team in the rise, making their future picks less valuable than their current picks.

Either way, he’s tough as nails. Worst case scenario, we flipped a slow footed junior shooter for some muscle with skill who can roster along side our prospects.
