The Panthers are looking at a top 10 pick. It's actually an amazing reload for them.

Does anyone know if the Avalanche can trade one of the 2nd rounders involved in the trade or are they forced to keep both?

I imagine they would have to put a condition on it being the lower of the two picks.

They can trade the lower of Colorado or Minnesota's 2028 2nd Round Picks (so a Conditional 2nd), but they can't specifically trade Colorado's or Minnesota's 2028 2nd Round Picks because they don't know which one is Calgary's yet.

Why not? Higher one goes to the Flames, lower one goes to whoever else they trade with. Shouldn't matter if they don't know which is which.

The race to the bottom is the most exciting part of today. All these picks Conroy has been accumulating will mean nothing if they're not able to capitalize on a few top 3 or 5 picks over the next few seasons. That is likely where your stars and core will come from. Sure they might get lucky and one of the later picks turns into a home run, but the best chance this team has at becoming elite is finding stars in the top 3, 5, 10 over the next 3-5 seasons and finding depth with all the other picks they've been able to accumulate. Both are difficult to achieve but they've given themselves a real shot and that's all you can hope for.

Yeah, great ouvk for them. Basically three straight finals with two Stanley Cups, a massive hangover season, complete with long term injuries to key players. And now they are looking like they'll get what rebuilding teams that are years from competing get in a top 10 pick.

On the other hand, the playoff salary cap actually makes retention more valuable. Only the part of a player's salary that you are actually paying counts towards your game-day cap in the playoffs.

It's hilarious that 24 hours ago I was reading here that the Edward's won't let Conroy retain!

Well, the draft system is cartoonishly flawed to the point of having almost no legitimacy, so it shouldn't be a surprise that things like this happen.
If the Panthers win the draft lotto this year and steal McKenna or Stenberg away from us, I'll be outside the NHL head office with torches & pitchforks. This is some serious bull####, and everyone knows it.

Chicago was first to 3.
Jones
Murphy
Dickinson
Chicago and Calgary are the only ones retaining 3 right now.
VAN, NSH, PHI, UTH are using 2 slots.

Bettman can pray that it isn't a top 10 pick. That gives him two more years to live!

It's top 10 protected. They're embracing the tank from what I can tell.

In any event, the draft system sucks. Basing it on reverse standings and random luck is a silly system.
|
The Panthers' 1st is indeed top-10 protected. However, they look like finishing right near the line where they keep or give up the pick, which gives them less than a 1% chance in the lottery. Keep your torches pitched and your pitchfork sharp, but don't actually grab them just yet!

They're 22nd in the league by points; a bit worse by points percentage. I don't see them dropping down against the stiff anti-competition of the bad teams in the West.

Florida deserves nothing from the lottery. But, neither does Chicago. So the best outcome is Florida has a big run here.
