Weegar is way more valuable than he is,
RS on Kadri and the value skyrockets IMO. Laine and Dach help with Cap this year but none of the players mentioned help in the future so why would Montreal pay more when all teams know he won't be valuable for long and you will be stuck at some point with a contract you don't want.
Good luck getting more with no RS

I would imagine taking Laine is a way for the Flames to avoid retention. I don't really know Montreal's cap situation but that's what makes the most sense to me.

Maybe Laine used his NTC to prevent moving to CGY

I feel like Coleman will go last minute to the Canes.
They're looking to pick up a bottom six forward today.

Fair!
Value of retention slot being more than just the dollars.
Reality that a bought out player with term would trigger a longer retention slot term. (Kadri face plant next year gets last two years of his deal bought out creating a 5 year term for the Flames to be out a retention slot)

Laine is a UFA in a couple months
Kadri has 3 years

Quick re-cap.
- Retention is not just about the dollars being spent, could be more about using up a retention spot for multiple years. And if Montreal used a buyout in the out years for Kadri, that would extend the retention spot use for Calgary by potentially a few years more. Some have speculated the Flames shouldn't be worried about those spots because they won't need them. Others have countered that we are experiencing right now the limitations of not having enough spots, and 3 more years after this one is a long time to have reduced optionality.
- Some rumors that ownership won't retain. Not clear if that's true, or if it's just that not enough value has been offered
- Some have suggested just taking a contract back instead, which could be a path, but doesn't solve for the out years that Montreal could be worried about.

Does it really hold down the retention spot? No wonder they are being sticky if so, I thought they'd just get the cap.

He's injured and a UFA i'm sure if he wanted to stay put wherever he is the flames would let him stay. He won't be a Flame past this season

maybe he's just a dick, or maybe there's something in the nhlpa contract that says he has to go to cgy while being injured (care etc)

You should do these thread summaries more often. It sure beats reading page after page.

Also, I think it was said that if the receiving team ever buys him out then it extends the use of our retention slot beyond the 3 years?
