Not a war on the car but definitely not smart either. This isn't about choice and lifestyle as much as it's about keeping development costs low for well connected and very profitable builders. It's not like this development in question is going to pass off major savings to buyers in exchange for massively reduced parking spaces.

The area right now is being developed with a ton of row homes, density, townhouses and other low level garbage from a parking and storage space perspective. The same thing is happening in the suburban communities with the lane homes, 25 foot lots and lack of parking options for visitors, trades people and owners.

You can't have policies in place where there is a lack of parking being developed where it can be, having residents and citizens have the right to buy whatever size cars they want (other countries don't) have a car centric city, garbage level transit and associated safety and not to expect problems like we have. Marda Loop streets are being littered with cars on the roads because of a lack of parking. What used to be single family homes with garages built for effectively boat sized cars, plus storage, is giving way to a single car garage that doesn't really fit what we are buying as citizens in 2026.

Do what other cities sometimes do and just ban car ownership from certain buildings, streets or areas. If car's aren't really allowed here and there, then you don't need this halfway pregnant strategy.

The same thing is happening in a lot of these communities with zero lot lines, lane homes and small front parking spaces. Investors, builders and landlords haven't built the garages, lack of parking up front, virtually no transit, thousands of homes needing to build means trades need parking and it becomes craziness with very low density or really anybody living there. The policies are insanity.

Why Deferred Maintenance Compounds Fast in Cities

-Physical Degradation Is Nonlinear
-Cities Grow on Top of Their Infrastructure

@JeromyYYC

The provincial government is imposing the largest property tax increase in Calgary’s history.

Calgary families, renters, and seniors are facing more than double the increase of Edmonton.

+$339 per home in Calgary.
+$154 in Edmonton.

Albertans deserve a system that is transparent, balanced, and fair.

Calgary’s mayor tinkered with the politically charged idea of a plebiscite around what he’s referring to as the city’s equalization transfer payments to the Government of Alberta.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas questioned the potential for a plebiscite during the tail end of a March 4 special meeting of council on the Alberta government’s budget impacts on the City of Calgary.

Farkas asked Chief Returning Officer Kate Martin about previous referenda questions the province has put to citizens, including a 2021 question on removing equalization payments from the Canadian Constitution.

“It seems to me, we’re in a very similar transfer payments and equalization situation here in the Calgary municipal context, as it compares to the rest of the province,” Farkas said.

Brilliant. Someone is gonna have to take a long look in a mirror on this one. Starting to come around to this Farkas fellow.

CBC analysis of campaign spending data: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...nces-9.7114359

Calgary Party spent an awful lot on strategy consulting to get only one councillor elected. DJ Kelly was a shoo-in before he even joined the party. I still cant believe that Stephen Carter continues to trick people into paying him for generic campaign advice. The man has been failing up for a decade.

No surprise that Sonya sharp spent the most in the mayor's race. You could see that spending all over town.

I think Nenshi hacked into his USB port on his hike.

I don't think I have ever seen such a 180 in a politician in my lifetime. Truly farking incredible!

You kinda have to wonder if he never had it in him to be a Manning Conservative, but was groomed and trained to act like one. He gave it his best try, but failed because it wasn't him. He only succeeded when he became himself.

Or he's lizard people.

Starting to believe Farkas is what he ran on. Truly reformed, learned some lessons. Time will tell but he's been impressive so far.

He hasn't pandered, which i think is great.

I don't ever remember Nenshi pandering too much either. Did his job and looked at each issue with the city's interest.

Gondek got caught a few times pandering and those who opposed her jumped on her for it.

Did this really qualify as "urgent business"?

Meh. it's not really pandering to me. It's anti-pandering. No more flags National flags being raised. applies to every nation.

Ill admit, i didnt understand all the MAGATs mad at Gondek for declaring a climate emergency either, but i can see how it upsets one side vs the other. i dont see how no national flag affects one side over the other

No, but it was the right call; stop giving people reasons to get divided over inconsequential nonsense. You guys can't be happy for each other raising your flags, well then this is the last one and now no one gets to -- happy now? That they still raised the Palestinian flag despite the whining from the Calgary Jewish Federation about it certainly is better than that time Gondek (rightfully) pulled out of the Menorah lighting after it became a political event and Farkas publicly criticized her for it -- that was pandering on the part of Farkas, and I was kind of annoyed at him for that because it suggested to me he might be slipping back to his old ways. Allowing it to go through and then saying "we're done now" was a good move instead of outright blocking it.

Farkas throws some shade at Smith and the UCP this morning...

I fully have to admit it took me a few seconds to get.
