100 percent. That is the perk of both players being under contract past this deadline.
This is a fortunate year for the Flames where the cap is going up significantly and the free agent pool isn't great. This doesn't feel like the last window to move these guys.

They might want to put Calgary's table close to the front this year

I don't think so... look at the weegar deal and how positive everyone was.
Conroy did well, he played poker right to the end. It's time to take the best offer now. Even if it's "just" a 2nd. Most of the fans just want to see the rebuild progress with a bit of pace now, it's been glacial so far. Today is a great chance to move into the next chapter. I would love to see a great return but I will be more disappointed if they do nothing personally.
Need to create a spot for a guy like stromgren as much as you need an asset

We were also only 1 of 2 or 3 noted sellers since the New Year....had more time than most to sell and yet we are left here 2.5 hrs from deadline seemingly left scrambling and potentially holding the bags. Yes I understand we don't HAVE to sell because they aren't expiring. Still opportunity missed.
I like Conroy and want him here for a long time. Same can't be said for ownership and his 'mentors' - Maloney and Nonis.

There are no reports that Conroy had a deal. He may have had an offer come in which (a) required retention and (b) wasn't enough for the retention.
There have been 2 big trades this week. Calgary had one.

With the 33rd, 34th, 35th, 36th, 37th, 38th and 40th picks.... oh, we can't announced the 40th at this time.
With the 33rd, 34th, 35th, 36th, 37th, 38th picks the Flames are proud to select....
Moments later:
With the 40th, 41st, 42nd and 43rd picks the Flames are proud to select.

Really would take away the ability to say “we were shocked he was still available”
“You know Pat, we were just really surprised he was still available at 45”
“how could you be surprised Craig, you made every pick from 34-45?”

I'd assume they've been talking about their price with and without retention since the Olympic break and all the foundation has been set.
Not late for anything.

I don't think freeing up a spot for Bill is a reason to trade Coleman.
In fact i don't think there are NHL ready prospects in the pipeline right now. 1 year from now? Yes. Now? No.

2nd + a little seems fine to me for Coleman.
Looking at past comps a 1st always felt like a bit of a stretch.
If they were willing to trade him for a 2nd though it would be done already

When he says we, he means his scouting staff. THey made the list and the guy at 45 was originally at 34 but he thought he'd scare the scouts a bit and drop him to 45.

Tons of trades are 'in the hopper' or whatever word they use each year after deadline comes and goes. It seems the past few years the bulk of trade deadline deals have come right at the finish line. I might be wrong, lord knows someone will happily let me know if I am.

Look you're free to believe and extrapolate however you wish.
I just don't think an outsider (insider that isn't all that inside because he's in the East) hears retention is a problem and jumps to the owner angle quickly.
When in actual reality it's ...
1) value for retention
2) how much retention
3) worry about slots

By one point. 100% in contention, especially with what they felt would have been a big improvement in net.

Bahl over Holtz is a massive upgrade

I think waiting to the summer in this case will reduce the value because now you're getting one fewer playoff run, they are older, and especially in Kadri's case it adds even more risk to taking on the contract. (Looking at Toffoli as an example)
For Kadri it already looks like his value was higher to Colorado last deadline than it is this deadline, and I think that depreciation continues.
Coleman I think the values will be closer but I do think he will hold slightly more value this year than next year, and I doubt he'd be a summer trade. Feel like wingers always generally have lower value in the summer.
|
Again, it’s a few months. If teams want them for this playoff run but aren’t willing to offer value for them then it really doesn’t matter.
We have to acknowledge that if they don’t move it’s because the offers aren’t good. If they were, they would move, these guys expect to move and I think the Flames expect to move them.
If they don’t, summer opens up a whole bunch of possibilities and other teams. Dealing exclusively with top teams that are tight against the cap and have no prospects or picks isn’t an advantage to us.

I think I am at the point that I would be ok with Coleman + our 3rd to Tampa for Geekie.

That's ignoring a lot of the risk with the slot discussed today.
