Some scenes are fun to watch again. Others are painful. In hindsight there are 2 or 3 main storylines I could have done without. And I think Queen DT was very poorly cast.
You think Daenerys was poorly cast?

I do. Not a great actress.

You have to also remember that in the beginning this wasn't a huge show with enormous following.
When they cast her, it wouldn't have been a large role with high quality talent going for it.
It was a take your top off a lot roll in the early seasons.

Actually they did attract a lot of excellent talent even in the early seasons, although they may not have been known so much in North America. But they had enough of the books to know that she is a very key figure, and they had Martin's outline as well. This show was expected to be quite big.

The Stark kinds may not have been well-known, but most of the adults were already highly regarded with various levels of fame. Lena Headey? Peter Dinklage? Sean Bean? Mark Addy? Jason Momoa had been a regular in 3 separate tv series, in 44 episodes of Baywatch and almost 80 of Stargate Atlantis.

She wasn't even the first actress cast for the part; that was Tamzin Merchant, who someone at HBO didn't like after they screened the pilot.

Just did a quick look.

Aegon's Conquest concludes at 1 AC (they use the conquest to track years in the universe)

House of the Dragon takes place around 101-112 AC

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place around 209 AC

Robert's Rebellion takes place around 282-283 AC

Game of Thrones takes place around 298-305 AC

There are no dragons by the time of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but people seem to have fairly good memories of their existence based on the play. The stories from GoT about sickly stunted dragons must take place some time in the decades after House of the Dragon, which based on the way the show is going probably results in a lot of the older large dragons dying off and then forced penning of the remaining ones.

Overall though, it's really not that long of a timeline. Less than 300 years of Targaryen rule in Westeros.

The Wall was built about 6-8,000 years before the events of GoT. The first men arrived 8-12,000 years before the events of GoT. The Andals arrive 6-2000 years before the events of GoT.

So that makes the Targaryen presence even smaller when compared to the history of Westeros.

What's really weird is they also have a Conquest show in development.

Two competing projects! Only one can emerge from the Dragon pit alive.

Yeah. The targs were really high on their own supply believing they were destined to/entitled to rule westeros when you think about it.

I don't know much about the conquest but from what I gathered basically an obscure valyrian house that happened to foresee the Doom went and conquered six (eventually seven) kingdoms that has already been settled in for thousands of years with the help of dragons and even after those dragons withered and disappeared felt it was their birthright to continue ruling there.

But it was basically just colonialism with dragon nukes.

It really puts the constant conflict between houses, disdain for the Targaryens and, general, constant desire to overthrow rulers into context. Both dragons and Targaryens are foreign to Westeros. Generally, it seem like in the GoT universe history is tied to specific lands via spiritual like forces.

It's pretty easy to see why a House like the Starks, who are descended from First Men, or a house like the Crannogmen, who are part Children of the Forest, wouldn't be so into Targaryen rule.

I'm actually surprised they lasted at all after the dragons were gone.
