I have to think the ‘offers north of 4M AAV’ either means offers of a one-year contract (so he took the most total money), or it's just BS. The fact that it's Stauffer reporting it makes me suspect BS.

Definitely.
But really, that's the Edmonton way. How many players up there had good stats four or five years before the Oilers acquired them? For that matter, how many years in the past do you have to go to find stats that make Paul Coffey look like a good idea?

They would be likely replenishing with 1st round picks that will be later than where they would be picking but the reality is that McDavid isn't the sharpest pencil in the box so in his mind he will think he still owes the team and city to play so I would expect he remains with them next season even if they miss the playoffs this year. It will be next offseason when he's likely traded.
Is this the Jack Squat who plays for the Banff Fighting Squirrels, or are there two Jack Squats?

I think the plan is to play it out as long as they can with McDavid and Draisaitl. If one or both leave, it is time to dive to the bottom of the NHL for as long as it takes to find another McDavid calibre player.
I don't see the Oilers trading McDavid unless he forces the issue. They will desperately hang on as long as they can.
Your big mistake is assuming the Oilers actually have a plan. McDavid is as good as gone once this turd of a season is finally flushed down the toilet. My bet is they start off just as bad next year and he asks out.
Neither McDavid or Drysaddle is making up for their shortcomings defensively now, and they certainly won't in a year or two once they begin regressing. Once they can no longer outscore the teams problems in the regular season all bets are off. The rules the league has in place now in terms of the draft are going to make it so that the Oilers can't just bank on being absolute garbage again for a decade and finally having two superstars fall into your lap after whiffing on numerous opportunities and being unable to find anyone outside the lottery.
Although I will miss the annual watch the Oilers suffer heartbreaking losses in the cup final traditions that have been formed, it's going to be glorious to watch them descend into pure wasteland status again after 'something special' turned into nothing more than a rancid fart in the wind.

I need to pay that "this post is terrible" guy more.
The Flames need to pay you more for being the organization's number one online lackey. If I said 2 days ago that Dickinson would return a 1st and Weegar wouldn't you and the rest of the CP PR street team would be losing your minds.
If you're honest with yourself you know this trade is better value than the Weegar trade. The Weegar trade is fine but the return is average and this is a clear overpay.

He didn't return a 1st on his own. He and another player + taking on a brutal contract returned a 1st

It kills me that they have acquired three players from the Blackhawks to help them defensively.
the Blackhawks
Over the past three years the Blackhawks have given up the 2nd most goals in the league behind only San Jose.
If an organization was tasked with hiring the worst GM's possibly, could they find worse than Chiarelli, Holland, and Bowman? I don't think so. Chiarelli will go down in infamy as one of the worst ever and Bowman's moves have been almost as damaging to their current and long term outlook. Holland is just a bad GM as he's now showing in LA where he took over a playoff team and made them a non-playoff team in one season.
