Weegar ate big minutes.... guess we're about to find out if Bahl, Whitecloud and others are capable of that. I dont really think they are.
But I dont see the Flames being better without Weegar, even though he's been bad this year.
Zayne on PP1 is exciting though.

Weegar was definitely a sacrificial lamb. I see the Flames spending money money on Defensive experience in free agency.
The hardest part of being a D man on the Flames is that the Flames are chronically short on puck carrying forwards. Hopefully some college kids can come on and give them a break(out).

Man it takes hours to catch up on a big trade.
Some thoughts ...
- I don't see high 2nd as quantity over quality, but quality quantity
- Prospect looks legit, not upper roster legit, but legit.
- Don't mind the Maata short term add, hopefully they can up his value.
- Whitecloud return made Weegar expendable making the Andersson trade even better it turns out.
- I don't worry about the 50 contract rule on a recent draft, you have two years to sign them (clearly there's a point where you jam it up though).
- Guessing they only make 2 selections in the 2nd round.
- Guessing three more players traded in the next 28 hours.
- Updated the draft rankings in the other thread, ... Calgary is all over that 35-50 range with the bands.
- This is a very clear direction and must have removed the doubt from even the most reluctant.
- No way the Flames are better after this transaction. That's more transition snipped away from the team making offence even more putrid.
- I'm all for being bold, but not giving players away, this accomplishes exactly that.

Going back to the number he wore when he won the Cup with Pittsburgh.

All the more reason to trade away Kadri and Coleman
|
Weegar has been playing the toughest minutes for Calgary, and his stats reflect that. You replace his minutes with Whitecloud/Bahl, watch their stats take a dive. Neither are first pairing dmen. Weegar was best as a 3-4 guy who got pushed up. Same thing happened to Andersson last year.
Losing Weegar definitely helps the tank.

The timing and speed of this -- and that arguably they didn't maximize his value by shopping him widely -- seems like a move made around the opening of the building. They've now accepted that they're not going to be competitive on day one; they need a superstar to market and sell tickets. Enter McKenna and a commitment to the tank.
Seriously, that building has to be weighing heavily on the team and ownership. They'll get six months to a year of marketing the "shiny new thing," but after that, people will want to see results or players at least doing exciting things on the ice.

Castagna's numbers through 3 seasons in the NCAA look a fair bit like Blake Coleman's (another 3rd rounder) to me

Maybe the biggest thing for Flames management is getting out from under the NTCs .
Lack of flexibility is probably irking them a bit.

FWIW, Wheeler tweeted he'd have had Castagna at 12 in Utah's pool (had him at 13 last year), but Calgary's pool is deeper.

The change in NCAA rules benefits 2nd-rounders, who usually need more runway than 1st-rounders.

Not that I can remember, seems like a very silly thing to not do if you have the ability to do it though. It's the guy's family name, they should make sure it's correct.

Love the trades so far. Who cares if some of you think it made the Flames worse. Not sure how they could be much worse than they currently are. With all the picks, we have a chance to find that diamond in the rough or trade for a pick in the 1st round. Please draft a center with the first pick.
