McDavid is in Edmonton, at most, until the end of next season. Maybe this summer if the Leafs or some other preferred destination can make the cap space and provide enough return on shorter notice.

So what happens in 2027 for a pick that’s 3 years out is irrelevant to him. McDavid and the Oilers know the window is basically shut after this season.

Well I hope this ends up being the #12 pick and the Oilers keep it only to have it turn into a top 3 pick the next year and McDavid also walks for nothing.

Absolutely nothing…

This board makes him out to be this self centered, pouty prima-donna, but he really doesn’t have that much depth to his personality.

Looks like the Oilers are doing their best to bring out the next decade of darkness* starting in 2028-29 or maybe sooner if they can keep up the great work!

*these decades are 15 years long.

There is no way the Oilers can keep their 2026 1st. It is gone to San Jose. It was top 12 protected as long as the Oilers kept their 2027 1st. They traded that today. San Jose now owns the Oilers 2026 1st round pick regardless of where the Oilers finish.

Calgary and Edmonton offer two different interpretations of scorched earth in the hockey asset sense over several years. We're witnessing such a contrasting case study, in the same province at the same time.

Flames burning their veteran roster players to the ground for picks and prospects, essentially starting from the moment it was apparent Huberdeau was not going to maintain his Florida form in Calgary.

Edmonton burning their picks and prospects to the ground for veteran roster players to bolster the McDavid-Draisaitl window before it inevitably slams shut. Has any team in NHL history gone more all-in with such reckless disregard for the future of the franchise?

It's ok to go all in when you have a McDavid/drasaital pairing. The players they have acquired are absolute garbage over the last 5 years. Whether signed or traded for.

Boy when things eventually crash up north, they are going to crash hard. When McDavid leaves, it’s going to be hard times for that organization.

What’s funny though is that the crash that comes won’t have the reward of high draft picks because they are trading those future picks away. They could miss the playoffs this year and give up a very high pick - will be the funniest thing ever if it’s a lottery winning pick. They miss next year and McDavid wants out so he’ll be traded that summer. Imagine if they finish 12th from the bottom next year and they get to keep that pick due to the protection… that would mean they give up an unprotected pick to Chicago in the 2028 draft and go into the 2027-2028 season with no McDavid and a 33 year old Draisaitl.

You almost have to wonder if the Oilers braintrust's backup plan is to trade both McDavid and Draisaitl if they don't win the cup to recoup oodles of high picks and prospects. Otherwise this franchise is not going to be competitive for an entire generation.

One of the things that plagues bad organizations is compounding mistakes.

We've had our share of those here.

But this is a brutal one. A bad contract signed just months ago, that you now have to package with a 1st to get two middling forwards to add to your stockpile of middling forwards.

They think they are winning the cup since Florida might miss.

I don’t know how to break this to you, but Edmonton is the one place in Alberta that consistently votes for the provincial NDP. I don’t ever recall meeting an NDP supporter who thought well of Trump.
