Out: 32 year-old right-shot D, who many would rank among the top 30 defencemen in the league.

In: 31 year old left-shot D, who many didn't even realize was still playing.
In: 20 year old unsigned prospect C, drafted in the 3rd round (70th overall) three years ago.
In: The currently-projected 35th, 47th and 50th overall picks in this year's draft.

On a team with zero offensive talent and zero offensive superstar F prospects, this is the kind of package everyone is happy to receive for our best players?

Traded our best defenceman on a very team-friendly contract to a playoff team entering their window of contention... a team with a plethora of young superstar forwards already on their roster and a pile of superstar forward prospects waiting in the wings... and we didn't come away with a single one of them. Instead, we get yet another veteran D to fill the void of the outgoing player, longshot prospect with maybe a third-line ceiling and three longshot draft picks.

Since 1963, only 313 players drafted in the second round have scored at least 100 points in their career. 313 players in 63 years of drafting. Only 69 players have scored 500 points. Only 8 players drafted in the second round have played 1000 NHL games.

...and this is what we're calling a GOOD/PRODUCTIVE/CONTENDER-BUILDING rebuild.

Quote:
Second Round
1+ NHL Games: 68.0% (992/1458)
100+ NHL Games: 39.9% (582/1458)
300+ NHL Games: 25.1% (366/1458)
500+ NHL Games: 17.1% (250/1458)
750+ NHL Games: 8.1% (118/1458)
1000+ NHL Games: 3.3% (48/1458)

1+ NHL Points: 59.8% (872/1458)
100+ NHL Points: 21.4% (313/1458)
300+ NHL Points: 9.6% (141/1458)
500+ NHL Points: 4.7% (69/1458)
750+ NHL Points: 1.6% (24/1458)
1000+ NHL Points: 0.5% (8/1458)

Anyway. Deadline's not here yet.

I dont mind this. 3 2nds is pretty funny, but with our high 2nd and that rangers high 2nd we are going to get some players.

Or moving up in the 2nd with the lesser 2 picks

I actually expect two of our 2nds to get traded for actual players at the draft

lost me right there.

not this year, he isn't, and that's very obvious

Catching up with. Random thoughts.
- This is a deal that is fair for both teams. Not a steal for either club, just a deal that makes sense for both clubs for where they are. I already like Utah (big fan of Guenther) so this will make it easier to root for them.
- Athletic trade grades: Utah: A-, Calgary: B+ (Goldman) / Mammoth: B+, Flames A- (Mirtle) which I think to how even this deal is
- 3 2nd round picks is a lot of draft capital, particularly when concentrated in the same year. That gives Conroy a TON of flexibility to move up if his scouts push him to. That's exciting. Picking all 3 guys is exciting too. Can't wait.
- Comparisons to Parayko are interesting. But if that deal goes through it shows that he is simply a better dman. I think he's underrated by a lot of fans for some reason, but I think he's a tier above Weegar. None the less if the Blues can make that deal, it's a very healthy return. But you can also compare with Myers, who is not nearly Weegar's tier, but Weegar also got a ton more in return. The value seems right
- I can understand wanting a better prospect or 1st instead, but it takes two to tango.

And most importantly

Can we PLEASE use this to put the final bullet in the silly notion that the Flames only trade pending UFAs? That's done now right? RIGHT?

They can’t make all these picks so we’ll see.
I’ve never bought the ‘more bullets’ argument. I just see a whole lot of magic beans for a legit top 4 defenseman. Unless he wanted out, why bother.

With Ottawa's 1st being forfeited, and NYR pick being all but guaranteed to be in the top three or four of the second round, this is as close to getting into the first round as you could expect to get.

Plus two other 2nds, a "B" grade prospect and serviceable bottom pair protector/mentor for Bruz.

If you use the Calgary and NYR picks yourself, and trade the other two 2nds to move up from the projected early 20's Vegas first rounder, into the mid teens... that's pretty tidy work.

Depends what you think of Weegar - I personally don’t have him anywhere near a top 30 D .

To me he’s a 32 year old declining D with 5 more years on his contract . In the years the Flames will be competitive (hopefully) he would be a 6 million $ pylon.

Getting out from his contract is a win in itself

It’s a young man’s game - speed rules all -

But if you see Weegar as a top 30 D I can understand your frustration

Weegar has always been a good soldier for the Flames and it’s always tough trading those guys away, but his skating was never going to be able to contribute to a fast team game. Matta replaces the veteran presence, the 3 2nds have many possibilities of value, and getting a 6’2” natural center 3 years into his development will be great for fostering the internal competition for future jobs. In Conroy I trust.

There's a very strong chance we just got out from under a contract that pays $6.25M/yr until 2031 for a declining player. Yes he's a quality defenseman now, but for how long? How do we know his rough year this year isn't a sign of things to come?

As for the picks & prospect, I'll reserve judgement until we see how all this plays out. It seems to me Conny has a plan. This will be an interesting draft to say the least.

Trading a vet for picks and a prospect. Yes, that’s exactly what we call a rebuild.

This is like running up to your friend's passenger side door on a hot day to go get a slurpee. You jump in, he locks the doors before you realize he just ripped a huge paint stripper.

With potentially two more rebuild trades to come this week, get ready for a “one of our many second rounders for your first” to be a part of the coleman or kadri return..

I like that the flames will have 4 picks in the top 37. Lots of options. Cannot complain about getting that many picks.
