I’m told the Oilers were fighting giving up the 1st and were gonna wait Chicago out but then when they heard the Flames were about to make a trade they pulled the trigger to be in the news at the same time.

OMG! I got my wish. I had just posted this morning that I hope the Oilers trade their 2027 pick. They just lost their conditions on the 2026 pick to San Jose, and they sit 5 points away from a top 10 pick. Would be fricken glorious to see them miss the playoffs, and then win the lottery and move up 10 spots to hand over a 1st-5th overall pick to San Jose.
Again, the unfortunate thing here is that it sets up San Jose to really become a powerhouse. They are looking like a future cup contender the way they are shaping up (need defence). Handing over another core piece to them is just nuts. However.. haha stupid Oilers!
I actually assumed that the Oilers would have used that pick to grab someone that moved the needle for them. Instead, they just added a lot more insignificant depth. This is hilarious.

I really think the most savvy thing Oilers management has done in the last two decades is pick McDavid 1st overall.

Oilers future = cooked
I get it, teams that think they're contenders will mortgage their future at times to give themselves a better shot at winning it all. Pretty common.
But.....the Oilers aren't any better than a year or two ago and have zero first rounders until 2028 at the earliest with a terrible prospect pool. Trading away a 1st just to get rid of Mangiapane and add a couple 4th liners is asinine.

At this point they are probably banking on the shelves being restocked via the McDavid trade they will be forced into making before his contract expires so they don’t lose him for nothing.
