I don't know what people expected. This seems pretty solid.

Being able to draft the Ruck twins would feel like adding a top blue-chip prospect to the pipeline

I kind of wish we had that many in 2027. More top end next year.
But I'll take it.

This is a pretty good trade. Those 3 seconds could be huge, and I am not going to judge a prospect I know nothing about. At least he's a center and a little light reading suggest he could be pretty good. Let's not forget Weegar had a lot of years left on his contract.

Jonathan Castagna is a Aydar Suniev level prospect, IMO

Parayko wasn't traded.

Good heavens i just dont get how some people evaluate things.
As of right now according to the pucks tankathon is showing the trade is:
Castagna-Shcherbakov-Schairer-Pugachyov.
Now to be fair i dont like all those picks to it could easily be combined with our own 2nd and also look like
Shcherbakov-Ruck-Ruck-Vandenberg.
Helps give some idea but it could also be ammo that you wslk out of the first with One of the top five nad then try to get Bjork in the teens .
Flexibility, ammo to make deals , or just load up on prospects.
Castagna may be a little underrated here due to draft position but for myself draft position goes out the window for the most part year after draft.

Ya like why the hell would they trade Weegar when hes playing so poorly. Give him the summer and trade him next year.
Such an odd deal, out of nowhere and felt rushed for no reason

Craig Conroy's strength is scouting. I generally give him the benefit of the doubt with his player evaluations, especially because I've already seen enough to believe Jonathan Costagna is a legitimate prospect.
Three seconds in a deep draft will be used well by Conroy, who has been drafting very well.
Olli Maata is a whatever.
I like the trade!

Also…I mean…you think Kadri is staying now?
This is as pure as tank-trades get.
I love it.

I personally think this is a great move. The Flames are going nowhere fast, moving Weegar out, gaining a center prospect and THREE 2nd round 2026 picks, which are the Rangers, Senators and Mammoth picks so they will likely be pretty good.
Not to mention the subtraction of Weegar makes the team worse, increasing the chance of a better 1st round pick this year and also allowing some young guys to play.
I like it.
Bring on more trades acquiring picks and prospects!

Conroy continues to add a ton of pieces. Nothing golden yet but many brass pieces could turn into gold.

Maybe one of their top 3 center prospects instead of the 4th or 5th best?
But it's fine. If the Flames staff see something, I trust them enough to believe them.

Buffalo reportedly has Mrtka and a 1st on the table for Parayko.
If that falls through are we sure they wouldn't circle back to the Flames?
How about San Jose, Detroit or others looking for a RH dman.
I figured the speed at which this traded happened meant is was a clear overpay and flames were getting a true blue chip prospect back.
Instead it feels like a bit like a grab bag of good but not great pieces
|
They were trading Mackenzie Weegar, a good but not great defenseman who’s owed $30M.
They were never gonna get Iggy Jr or anyone else in that ‘can’t miss’ conversation.

With this trade out of the way, excited to see what we get for Coleman and potentially Kadri.

Have to think Conroy is a fan of this draft if he was willing to give up our top minute-munching D for picks.
I am alright with this and given our scouts lately, this is just more bullets in the chamber.

And to everyone who says it is a bad trade: we just made ourselves worse. This will help our chances of a top pick the next 2 years.
We also were not expecting to trade Weegar. Then we got Whitecloud who made him expendable. We got three 2nd round picks and a prospect as a bonus!
This absolutely helps the rebuild tremendously.
