Knights NHL GMs frustrated by new salary cap rules at trade deadline

Quote:
Some NHL teams told ESPN that they're frustrated by the impact that the league's expedited salary cap rules have had ahead of Friday's trade deadline.

The new collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA, which was announced in July, begins Sept. 16. The league, however, moved up a handful of new rules governing the salary cap to the 2025-26 season and only briefed its general managers about those changes last September.

"Teams made plans and then, in September, the league changes the rules. It's bush league," one NHL team executive told ESPN. "All of a sudden, if you're one of these teams that's been kind of planning a certain way, they just changed the rules on you."
Geez I wonder which GMs are the ones complaining?

I suppose this may contribute to the buyers market and hurt the Flames a bit. Especially with double retention gone. Could have made our Kadri trade a bit easier.

No sympathy for the GMs. They pretty much telegraphed that there will be changes when they said they were watching LTIR abusers at the start of the last players.

Guaranteed it’s Bowman. Which is comical because it implies that the Oilers had a plan.

"Bush League"? The NHL? Nah......

Maybe someone will have the chops to ask Gary about that tonight as he's in town and probably (maybe?) will be on the intermezzo.

Not the Oilers. They have a corporate lending lawyer taking care of that.

Hah.

Teams made plans... that's why they pushed the rules ahead. They could see you planning it dorks.

NHL: "We are going to make cap rules now so that you can't cheat the system".

NHL GM: "Oh crap, they are making rules so we can't cheat. Let's plan to cheat like heck this last season then".

NHL: "Yeah, we're going to have to make those rules applicable now I guess since you all missed the point".

The NHL was obviously giving them runway to ramp down that strategy and adjust over the next season. It wasn't a ticket to go all out and do the exact thing that they didn't want you to do.

What do they expect? They bent and bent and bent the rules to the point where they pushed it to the limit where the league had no choice.

"They wont let us circumvent the Cap anymore like we had fully been planning on doing!!!"

No kidding? Wow...who could have seen that coming other than absolutely everyone? People have been bitching about those loopholes for the better part of a decade...that writing on the wall might as well have been in Neon ya dumb asses.

I had to send him a note on this and will let him know about the sarcastic mockery he is receiving from afar.

It’s laughable. “Waaah we had plans to have a $150 million theoretical cap in the playoffs even although the players don’t get paid. What will we tell Connor?”

Not sure why everyone is being so snarky about this. It's not just EDM and VGK who have lost flexibility - almost every potential buyer (DAL, COL, MIN, TB) is capped.

The rule changes mean there will fewer trades going forward, and less potential buyers for Kadri. We like trades, don't we? And we want multiple bidders for Kadri?

Anyone know why they got rid of the double retention ?

The NHL doesn’t want the best teams loading up and the bad teams getting additional assets for free ?

Might just be a parity thing -- like the salary cap in the playoffs. Doesn't allow the have teams with the big budgets to load up on double-retention players. Otherwise, I can't see the point.

Lined up with the salary cap going up so the NHL probably felt the increased cap would address some of the inflexibility this creates.

I also don't think they liked that owners could essentially buy draft picks with cash. I'm not a fan of retention at all really, but at least they limited it to three slots per team.

People are snarky because of how GMs are complaining about the loophole being closed after being warned. The fact GMs had plans before the rule change in September is ridiculous and shows how blatantly the system was abused.

Yes, we like trades. Yes we want buyers for Kadri. But people also disliked the blatant abuse of the cap system in the playoffs. It’s possible to hold both points of view. It’s even possible to be snarky about GMs and wish this had happened one year later.

Having this change is much better for the parity of the league going forward. The cap rising so much is potentially starting to create more of a gap between richer teams and the rest.
