Who should the Flames take #1 overall (pre-TDL edition)
This is a repeat of the past polls we've run.
https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=200665
https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=200830
But some things have changed since then. It seems like there is now a clear top 2, and then a bigger group following. And the Flames may not end up in a top 3 position. So I've expanded the names and we will go deeper.
While this first round will likely be a battle between the top 2, we can use this to settle on the expanded list.
And remember, this isn't who the Flames WILL take, it's who the Flames SHOULD take.

I used Bingo's consensus rankings for the list. I'm happy to add a name or two if there is someone obvious missing.

I changed my pick from Stenberg to McKenna this round. I am pretty much 50-50 on them, but McKenna's increase in production was really impressive and pushed me back over to him. Maybe a little bit of Western Canadian bias as well.

In a perfect world for me, the Flames end up in the 2nd overall and Vancouver goes Stenburg and Conroy run up to pick McKenna.

I still say Stenberg, in spite of McKenna's flashy offensive skills. With his compete level, strength, ability to protect the puck, and shooting and passing skills, I think Stenberg is literally the next Jarome Iginla.

All I keep thinking about though is Malholtra getting Barkov comparisons.
I almost picked him.

McKenna all day long and twice on Sundays. We have his center already, the guy that had amazing chemistry with him in Cole Reschny. That's the decider for me over Stenberg, well...
Next poll I'll be in the major minority.

Quote:
No. 4: Caleb Malhotra, C, 6-foot-1, 182 pounds, Brantford Bulldogs (OHL)
The 2026 draft class is somewhat thin on elite centres, but Malhotra is a player who I value a great deal. He is getting between 19 and 22 minutes per game of ice time for the Bulldogs and is a complete player who’s being deployed in all situations. Malhotra’s combination of speed, skill, smarts and compete stand out as projectable elements of his game that he will take to the pros. He’s trustworthy and can play up and down the lineup. Malhotra has produced 23G-38A so far this season and he’s plus-27 defensively. He could approach 100 points by the end of the year without sacrificing detail on the defensive side of the game.
NHL Projection: First-line forward. Deployed in all situations.

2.3 points per game as a 16/17 year old in the CHL.
It's a no brainer IMO

The assault really cleared up my strength concerns about him.
Amazing what breaking jaws will do for a guy.

I'm still on team Swe, but it's a coin flip for me. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Stenberg for a number of reasons. Having said that the gap is not very wide but it so much depends on what you value in a player?
Does Mckenna probably have the higher ceiling? Probably. However for an average sized winger to be a gamechanger is rare and only about four or five if these guys are in the league. He is pure offense so his usage is going to be offense only. Has the talent to be a 100 point guy in strategic deployment. Doing great in the NCAA.
Stenberg is already playing in a men’s professional league as an 18 year old. You dont get ice time unless your contributing to winning and he is just under a point per game. Has the talent to be a point per game but also a player you use whether defending a lead or looking to get it. To me that makes him a more valuable player-deployment.
Obviously my take would be happy getting any of the guys in the top five or six.
