I understand, but the point of putting him on waivers is hardly to demote him, is it? I mean I don't think they can replace him for the amount they would save against the cap.

The most that can be buried in the AHL is $1.15 million, so even if they send him down, they'll still be carrying $2.45 million of his cap hit.

Didn't Mangiapane ask for a trade like, about a month into the season?
Waivers are obviously a last resort, as the Oilers could not find a partner.
Mangiapane would rather play in Bakersfield than stay in the poisonous Edmonton environment.

All the same to him money-wise. Although I guess the road trip per diems are structured differently.
Also: He gets out of his obligatory weekly shift bussing tables at the Trove.

I doubt they send him down and replace him with a league minimum player.... probably a pre-curser to them paying to trade him with draft picks as a dump.
How much would it take to dump him and his salary, a second?

Well, no one would claim Mangiapane. So it's not a very anxious deadline. The question is whether they send him down after he clears.

He's still an NHLer - he scored 14 goals last year (which is tied with our current team leader ) He's just not a $3.6M player.

Maybe they wanted to send him somewhere he absolutely refuses to consider (he has a full NMC) and this is pressure.

If he clears and is subsequently traded, can he be assigned to the new organization's AHL affiliate? A good insurance policy for a team expecting a long playoff run.
