Oilers goalie has to be the worst job in the world for a recovering alcoholic. Hopefully he has a strong support network.

I know it was coined on this site and not technically something someone connected to the Oilers said. But I'd like to submit Edmonton is No Good XIII: The GLOAT (Greatest Loser of All-Time) as a potential early contender for our next thread.

Such a perfect name for Mavi and maybe our last chance before he flees!

Edmonton Oilers sink to new low in San Jose, can this mess be fixed?

https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/e...-mess-be-fixed

Can the Edmonton Oilers figure it out? Is Connor Ingram the new No.1?

'Elite cap management': Edmonton Oilers waive veteran winger, veteran d-man

Staples has no shame.

though even Staples admits he doesn't really know (he sticks to his areas of expertise such as urinals)
1. The cap moves here are so complicated that only a corporate lending lawyer can understand them, so good thing we have Ira Cooper, top corporate lending lawyer, on hand to give his assessment. If Cooper says this is elite cap management, I’ll take his word for it. I’ve given up on this level of comprehension of the CBA when it comes to managing LTIR with bonus money in the context of a team’s cap.

How is putting a guy on waivers “elite cap management”?

That’s like calling an own goal “tertiary scoring.”

You’re not a corporate lending lawyer obviously.

especially since it has no impact on the cap - you only save $1Mish, and you have to replace the player.

(assuming you then send them to the minors, which also isn't a given)

Yeah that's a real head scratcher... when Mangiapane clears they get 1.15 in relief, and the rest of his contract still hits their cap.

If they call up Howard who is on 950k a year they save 165k. And in doing so you downgrade your third line significantly by replacing Mang with a defensively poor, small winger who isn't productive offensively at the NHL level and from where I am sitting, make your team even worse. As much as Mangiapane hasn't been producing he is an NHL veteran who is defensively responsible and has a decent amount of playoff experience.

"Elite" move

The Mangi contract was terrible, but I love seeing what they've done this year.

Skinner to Jarry
Kulak to Stastny
Mangipane to Howard

Just steadily making the team worse

Looks to me like sheer desperation. The Oilers are trying to scrape together any bits of cap space they can find. Waiving Mangiapane is about equivalent to turning the couch upside-down and shaking it in case you missed any small change when you looked under the cushions.

Puckpedia says they have $12,009 of deadline cap space. Good luck boys.

Unless you're a corporate lending lawyer, you can't know the magic that can be accomplished with $12,000.

They are better off trading Mang + a second for a 7th to get the cap space.
