Joking aside - if we win today we are 4 pts behind LA with a game in hand and people think they are a Kadri potential destination . I can’t see them buying if they lose tonight which takes another team off the board

Up until this point, we haven't traded any players that were not on the last year of their contract.
I can appreciate the rumors around Kadri and Coleman and others. But until we make these moves, it is hard to feel confident that these players will be traded.
I know there are tons of rumors around both, so just hoping we can cross the finish line on these trades.

Kadri, rightfully given where he is in his career, wants to go play meaningful hockey.
If the Flames don’t trade him now, and instead do in the Summer…it’s a wasted playoff run for Kadri while Father Time chases him. Is he going to be as happy behind closed doors?
Doing right by Kadri and by the Flames -> trading Kadri. That’s why I think it should happen, and why I think it will happen, and that what we’re currently hearing is posturing as part of trade negotiations.

I would think contenders would want Kadri for this play off run and next. Last year for Kadri is a mute point with a buyout of only $1.1MM I think for teams its got to be now, just wont be at the price we are all hoping

It sounds like the situation would be taking a player back that is best bought out. Is Laine at that stage? Otherwise I don't get the buyout comment either.

Why would the Flames even buy someone out ? I guess you save a bit of real $ but you need another player then as well to take that roster spot

I thought some of the insiders (honestly can't remember who), were adamant that Flames had quality offers in hand for Kadri.
It just makes no sense to keep him at this point if true.

Laine is in the final year of his contract. No buyout needed.

Retaining 50% of Kadri's salary means getting $3.5M a year off your books.
IMO it is more about the slot when it comes to retention.

I think they should trade him and the Flames probably do as well but I don’t think they are going to take a crappy return in order to slough him off this season. I thought they were really dumb in keeping Markstrom and it worked out so they a little more grace this go around

Or how Edwards views the value of that retention. I don’t think it’s cheap as the Flames don’t need cap

If it's possible to take a bad contract back I'd always prefer that to retention, especially if the term is close to equal.
Look what Pittsburgh was able to do with Kulak and what San Jose did with Walman.
There is always the potential the piece you get ends up being a valuable asset again.
