Why pour water on 5th round picks in the Wyttenbach thread? Like I see your point but also why here?

Because Tkachukwagon appeared to be implying that a 5th-round pick is a good return for a roster player. Wyttenbach is great, no question, but he's also a once-in-a-decade find.

I truly don't think people appreciate the dominance of Wyttenbach's season, not only does he lead the NCAA in scoring by 11 points and PPG, he leads his team by an incredible 19 points, no other college player is close to that gap, and he's a fc'n freshman.

At this point I hope he turns pro next year, let him chew up the AHL for a few months and be a Flame by Xmas

Here's a cool tidbit, he was Butch Goring's neighbor growing up.

Even if he was a highly touted first rounder, this would still be a crazy impressive season. Hopefully this turns into a Gaudreau / Theo Fleury level of late round find.

Ha ha ha no I wasn’t. I was implying that the Flames scouting staff found a hell of a player in the 5th round, and sometimes draft position doesn’t always reflect or limit a player.

I wonder where he'd go if he was in this year's draft?

Maybe around where Bjorck is (who also looks like a formidable talent albeit undersized), 7-12th?

Buffalo. The draft is in Buffalo this year.

Even if all Wyttenbach becomes is a regular everyday NHLer, that's a home run and congratulations to the scouting staff are in order.

Maybe there's more. We'll see.

A 5th-round pick is a long, long shot to turn into an NHLer.
Hard to succeed playing through all the wet blankets.

When a prospect pops this hard its kind of difficult to continue keeping your expectations grounded in reality, but at the same time it's very fun to think he could become superstar-level good.

He's up to a coin flip chance of being a 1st liner on that future projection chart.

Middle of the road or fringe players typically don't set the NCAA on fire at 18.

Just remember that list of comparable seasons. All were or are significant players in the NHL.

Of all the things you could wet blanket, this kid's upside would be the most nonsensical. He isn't just rising above, he's punching a hole through all expectations.

Also, what more could you ask for from a 5th round pick? Seriously? By all accounts so far (and admittedly it is early still), this was an outstanding scouting pick by the Flames. Throwing shade on this kid right now (if there is any really) is a strange position to take; these are the types of picks in the later rounds that usually fade into oblivion over time. Wyttenbach is doing exactly the opposite.

Didn't you read earlier, he had a point shot blocked last game that led to an EN goal against. That is such a glaring mistake it warranted a specific post highlighting it. With play like that he'll never make the NHL... /s

I bet he hasn't even risked felony charges protecting his mother's reputation.

Butch Goring was a 5th rounder too... just saying...

(51st overall in those days... but still).
