From a different article
Living in Alberta will cost you more in 2026.
The budget includes a significant increase in education taxes ($154 in #yeg, $340 in #yyc), along with 30 different fee hikes (incl some entry fees at provincial sites and higher costs for vehicle registration).

Hilarious. Income tax cut last year, property tax increase this year. Maybe DJones is writing their policy.
Any explanation why Calgary got double the tax increase? Is that just greater home value in Calgary?

I was surprised to see Minister Horner be open about the possibility of a PST. He said that he doesn't have a mandate to put it in the budget (obviously) but it would be up to Albertans to decide between more taxes or a larger deficit.

So much winning. It must hurt to be this popular.

When were they given their mandate to increase property taxes as much as they have, I wonder.

Well it sure seems the UCP actually have a plan. They are going to poisin the well for the NDP.
With a massive budget deficit that does nothing to address revenues they clearly have no real fiscal plan. As the next election approaches they sense they may lose it, if the NDP win the only answer is going to be to raise taxes back to where they should’ve been, or god forbid a sales tax. Then the UCP hope they can pull off a comeback and enjoy the fruits of the increased revenue the NDP would be forced to implement n but they themselves would never put in place.

It's not clear on if this is against the province, or the UCP specifically? Anyway, irrelevant. More winning.

Thanks, Notley.
This is great fodder for the NDP in Calgary. The mighty tax busters of the UCP showing who they care about most. Time for Calgary to kick these wankers out, if we can just get a few more geologists and doctors on board.

They're already trying to spin it as "Nenshi didn't fix the water main and now the Province has to pay for the repairs and they're making Calgarians pay for it, just as they should! Calgarians should blame Nenshi!"
... I'm not well versed on the division of responsibilities for funding that sort of infrastructure maintenance or if it's even classified as maintenance or a capital project, but regardless, I suspect that water main repairs aren't driving the increase.

Well no, because the province is just taking that money. Have they announced they are providing funding for the water main replacement? I don't think so. Which means they are lying liars, which we already know, so all of this tracks.

Well if it weren't for Notley 7 years ago the UCP wouldn't be forced create such a huge deficit today.

Maybe it should be spun that Calgary doesn't like paying these equalization payments to the rest of Alberta.

We should separate, and take the Bow Valley corridor with us. Not Chestermere, though. Just in case they were getting any ideas.
